NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team (3-5) finished day one of a tri-meet against SUNY Geneseo (3-3) and the Rochester Institute of Technology (4-1) at Elting Pool Friday, trailing the Blue Wave, 90-56, and leading the Tigers, 93.5-52.5.

Senior Ray Amato (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills) and freshman Lucas Rusinak (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Peter's Boys) each won individual events. Amato came from behind to win the 100 butterfly in 54.88, while Rusinak won by nearly 20 seconds in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:35.73.

Three different Hawks posted runner-up finishes. Senior Marc Battisti (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) registered a second-place time of 2:06.73 in the 200 individual medley, senior Jesse Sweeney (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) charted a second-place time of 55.72 in the 100 backstroke and senior Pete Nastasi (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) clocked a second-place time of 1:03.95 in the 100 breaststroke.

In addition, the 200 medley relay quartet of Sweeney, Nastasi, Amato and senior Jeremy Borrelli (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.02.

One pool record fell on the men's side Friday, as the Geneseo 200 freestyle relay squad of Frank Schiappa, Aaron Wagner, Drew Rogers and Dan Strothenke went a 1:26.76, which stood more than a second faster than the previous standard of 1:27.96 that was set by SUNY Cortland in 2009.

The tri-meet resumes tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Elting Pool.
