New Paltz Men’s Volleyball Beats Southern Vermont in Five Sets after 3-0 Loss to Stevenson

BEVERLY, Mass. – On Sunday's second and final day of play at the Endicott College Men's Volleyball Invitational Tournament in Beverly, Mass., the State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (14-8) split a pair of non-conference decisions. The Hawks first lost a 3-0 (28-26, 25-17, 27-25) decision to Stevenson University (13-9) before winning in five sets against Southern Vermont College (8-13), 3-2 (25-15, 27-25, 21-25, 25-27, 15-11).

Against the Mustangs, the Hawks were led in kills by senior opposite Mike Van Tyne (Rochester, N.Y./Rush-Henrietta), who had 13. Sophomore setter Misa Garo (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Hayes) dished 30 assists in the first New Paltz match of the morning, with sophomore outside hitters Brian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Brian O'Connor (Guilderland, N.Y./Guilderland) and Cameron Brown (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) each landing a service ace. O'Connor led the squad with four blocks of the block assist variety, while senior libero Michael Dauernheim (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) had a Hawk-high seven digs.

New Paltz went the distance in its midday five-set victory over the Mountaineers after winning the first two sets. In that match, the Hawks were again led by Van Tyne with 23 kills. Smith moved to primary setter for the match, issuing 48 assists in the process. O'Connor and junior outside hitter Bryan Weber (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) achieved three services aces each for the Hawks, with O'Connor also leading the team with seven total blocks (four solo, three assist). Van Tyne and sophomore outside hitter Victor Tuminelli (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) contributed 11 digs each to the victorious effort.

The Hawks next return to the Hawk Center on Wednesday, March 28, to take on United Volleyball Conference (UVC) opponent No. 6 New York University at 7 p.m., in a matchup rescheduled from February 29.
