NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior midfielder
Mateo Cordini (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours) scored two goals in the first 5:09 to push the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (3-2-1) past The College at Old Westbury (0-7-0), 6-1, in non-conference play at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.
Cordini's first goal came at 1:24 when he deflected senior midfielder
Shanshe Khosroshvili's (Brooklyn, N.Y./Edward R. Murrow) corner kick to the left side of the net and past the keeper. He scored again just minutes later when senior defender
Harrison Lane (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) sent a perfect ball from midfield to the top of the box, where Cordini sent it to the top-right of the net to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Lane added a goal of his own in the 19th minute when a defender deflected the ball to the front of the net with nobody but Lane there to take it.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) allowed a goal for the first time this season, but made three saves to improve his record to 2-0-1 on the year.
Freshman midfielder Joseph Hughes (Westbury, N.Y./Carle Place) picked up his third score of the year early in the second half. Sophomore midfielder
Alec Johnson (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) and junior defender
Robert Vandy (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa) each picked up their first goals of the season, both coming off penalty kicks in the second half, which were the results of Old Westbury handballs in the box.
Old Westbury's Tana Weekes picked up a goal off assists from Michael Mosher and Steven Burgos late in the second half. Goalkeeper Marcelo Guardado allowed six goals, but made three saves en route to the loss on Saturday.
New Paltz held a 17-10 shots advantage, including a 9-4 edge in shots on net. The Hawks also led 3-0 in corner kicks.
New Paltz begins State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Friday, Sept. 21, when they host SUNY Cortland at Alumni Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
