Women’s Tennis Falls, 5-1, to Geneseo in SUNYAC Title Match

Box Score

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team lost, 5-1, to SUNY Geneseo in the 2013 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tennis Championship Tournament final on Sunday at the Binghamton Tennis Center, marking the third straight runner-up finish in the league for the Hawks.

New Paltz has now finished either first or second in the SUNYAC for 12 straight years, dating back to its first conference title in 2002. With the win, Geneseo has won five of the last six SUNYAC titles, and by virtue of winning the league championship, the Knights gain the conference's automatic bid into the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.

New Paltz concludes its fall season at 8-4 overall and continues its 2013-14 campaign in March. Geneseo closes out its fall season at 11-1 overall and resumes action on April 3 against Roberts Wesleyan University.

Both teams advanced through the bracket with ease to reach the Sunday championship, winning each match along the way, 5-0. New Paltz, which held the East Division's top seed, defeated West Division No. 4 SUNY Oswego in the quarterfinals before topping East Division No. 3 SUNY Cortland in the semifinal round. Geneseo, which held the West Division's top seed, beat East Division No. 4 SUNY Plattsburgh in the quarterfinals before blanking East Division No. 2 SUNY Oneonta in the semifinals.

New Paltz put up a fight in doubles competition, as the tandem of junior Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) won, 8-6, at flight two over Minxuan Yuan and Dexuan Yuan. Senior Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) and junior Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) nearly pulled off a victory at flight one, but the pair lost by an 8-6 final to Marylen Santos and Amanda Rosati. Sophomore Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) and freshman Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) fell, 8-1, at flight three to give Geneseo a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Despite the fact that New Paltz battled at flights one through three in singles competition, none of those results ultimately came to fruition, as Geneseo won at flights four through six to clinch the match.
