NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team had its offense in top form on Saturday afternoon at the Turf Field, scoring the game's first three goals en route to a 4-2 victory over the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in non-conference play. The Hawks amassed 31 shots against their Liberty League opponent and allowed only nine in winning their third game in their last four outings.
Senior forward
Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) tied the career program record for assists (19) with two helpers in the game. Sarah Schloss also notched 19 assists from 2007-10.
Sophomore forward
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) had a pair of goals for the Hawks, one coming in each half. New Paltz peppered RPI junior goalkeeper Hannah Clough with 31 shots, 18 of those coming in the second half. Clough made 16 saves against the relentless Hawks offense.
The victory improves to New Paltz to 9-6, while RPI drops to 4-9. The Hawks return to State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a pair of big games against SUNY Cortland on Friday, Oct. 25, at 4 p.m. and SUNY Oswego on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m. RPI next hosts Vassar College on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 5 p.m.
Freshman forward/midfielder
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) put the Hawks on the board at 3:22, cashing in on a feed from Conklin from the center of the circle. McKeveny then assisted on an Ackerman score at 17:10 to give New Paltz a 2-0 lead, which it would carry into halftime.
Ackerman scored unassisted just 1:34 into the second half to put the Hawks on top by three, but RPI's sophomore midfielder Hana Murphy scored off a pass from senior midfielder Jen Piselli at 41:01 to erase the shutout bid.
Conklin played a ball into the circle that Aragosa converted off of at 46:39, and just 13 seconds later, RPI's freshman midfielder Claire Cecilio rattled the back of the cage off a feed from junior forward Molly Zuk to round out scoring.
Senior goalkeeper
Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) gained the win, making two stops.
In addition to its large shot margin, New Paltz outgained RPI in penalty corners, 10-5.
