ONEONTA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team, attempting to keep its conference playoff hopes alive and also play spoiler at the same time, took a 2-1 lead over host SUNY Oneonta early in the second half, but the Hawks surrendered the game-tying goal with under four minutes to play and had to settle for a 2-2 tie in State University of New York Athletic Conference play on Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Soccer Field.
When Red Dragons sophomore Dylan Williams, who scored both of his team's goals, knotted the game off a penalty kick at 86:21, the contest lasted two extra sessions and subsequently went to a shootout. Oneonta won the shootout, 5-4, a SUNYAC provision needed for tournament seeding scenarios.
Williams' second goal of the game came on a penalty kick when senior teammate Luke Halberg was knocked to the ground inside the box in the 87th minute.
With the loss, the Hawks fall to 4-9-3, 2-4-1 in the SUNYAC. Oneonta improves to 9-3-4, 5-0-2. New Paltz will next host Mount Saint Mary College at Alumni Field on Tuesday, October 22 at 3:00 p.m. Oneonta remains idle until visiting SUNYAC-leading Buffalo State next Friday, October 25 at 3:00 p.m.
Williams earned the game's first goal, scoring in the 30th minute off a wide open shot from the top of the box. The Hawks, who held an 8-5 shot advantage in the first half, didn't take long to answer.
In the 34th minute, senior midfielder
Hobie Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) corralled a pass in front of the goal off his chest that was offered by senior midfielder
Bernardo Menendez (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours). Ramin then rifled a strong shot into the lower right corner of the goal to tie the game 1-1.
The Hawks surged ahead 2-1 in the 46th minute when awarded a penalty kick. Menendez stepped up and converted. New Paltz maintained the lead until Williams tallied his second goal of the contest in the 86th minute.

Per SUNYAC tiebreakder rules for soccer, the teams went to a penalty kick shootout following the second overtime period.
In the shootout, Oneonta made its five kicks and led 5-4 entering the final attempt by senior forward
Javier Ventas (Madrid, Spain/Santa Maria del Pilar). His shot was stopped by Oneonta junior goalie Brian Wagstaff.
