In Season Finale, Women's Soccer Ties Buffalo State In Double Overtime

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Blustery conditions and high winds played havoc with game conditions as both women's soccer teams from the State University of New York at New Paltz and Buffalo State battled to find scoring opportunities, and in the end, the final regular season contest in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play ended in a 0-0 tie in double overtime.

For the Hawks, who conclude the 2013 campaign 3-11-4, 1-8-2 SUNYAC, it was the fourth tie of the season. The Bengals finish the regular season 11-5-2, 6-2-1, and will be the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC playoffs. Buffalo State will host a semifinal game on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at 1 p.m. against the winner of No. 3 SUNY Cortland and No. 6 SUNY Geneseo.

Both teams had little trouble getting shots – Buffalo State held a 24-18 advantage – and each goalie was required to make stops. New Paltz sophomore goalie Krysten Kane (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central) had nine saves and Buffalo State junior goalie Linda Banfield had eight.

Despite that activity, there were few solid scoring opportunities, though Kane was forced to make a deft save in the 37th minute of the first half when senior midfielder Jordan Dudish laced a shot right of the net that Kane made a punch save on.

The game started with an early header opportunity by Bengals senior forward Shaunta Pyles that sailed over the cross bar in the 13th minute. Minutes later, the Hawks had a nifty give-and-go opportunity from freshman midfielder Shannon Maher (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) to freshman defender Kaite Mulry (Savyville, N.Y./Sayville) that just missed.

The Hawks put pressure on the Buffalo State defense in the 30th minute with a header by sophomore Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) and a strong rip by sophomore forward Chelsea Weir (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip).

The second half and overtimes played out to a defensive stalemate.
