Conklin Enters Record Books in Field Hockey’s 5-4 Win over Stevens

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior forward Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) set two program records as a result of her three-goal performance, as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team edged the Stevens Institute of Technology, 5-4, in a high-scoring, non-conference affair on Wednesday afternoon at the Turf Field.

Conklin scored twice in the first half and completed the hat trick in the final 20 minutes of the contest, finishing the day with 17 goals and 38 points on the season. With her second marker of the afternoon, she broke Patricia Erickson's 2004 single-season program record of 16 goals, and with her final goal of the contest, she eclipsed Sarah Schloss' 2009 single-season program mark of 36 points.

New Paltz advances to 7-5 overall and visits Rowan University on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. for a non-conference clash. Stevens drops to 7-4 overall and hosts St. John Fisher College on Saturday.

The first half was see-saw battle, with the two sides trading goals. Stevens' Grace Ridge scored off a penalty-corner insertion by Marguerite Chavez in the 17th minute to open scoring, but just more than a minute later, Conklin leveled the tally at 1-all with a sweep-shot goal from the top of the circle. The Chavez-to-Ridge penalty-corner connection worked again in the 26th minute to give the Ducks a 2-1 advantage, but Conklin answered back at 29:14 with an unassisted goal off a corner. Both teams entered halftime deadlocked at 2-all.

Just 1:59 into the second half, junior midfielder/defender Deirdre O'Neill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) got involved with scoring to put New Paltz on top for the first time in the game, parting traffic in the circle before ripping a shot into the back of the cage. Dailyn Brook cashed in on a rebound at 39:14 to knot the score back up, this time at 3-all.

New Paltz got the separation it needed midway through the second stanza, receiving a marker from sophomore forward Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) at 48:00 before Conklin tacked on an insurance goal at 56:36. Sophomore defender Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) was credited with an assist on Conklin's final score. Finally, with time expired, the Ducks converted on a penalty corner, as Dailyn Brook tipped in a feed from Megan Traub.

New Paltz finished with a 30-17 advantage in shots and a 16-9 cushion in penalty corners.

Senior goalkeeper Antonija Pjetri (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern) earned the win, making eight stops, while her counterpart, Emily Stukenborg, turned aside four shots in the losing effort. Stukenborg was pulled at the 48-minute mark, and Felicia Heard finished out the game in goal for the Ducks, making three saves.
