2013-14 Dr. Patrick R. Damore SUNYAC Commissioner's Cup StandingsCORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz sits fourth out of 10 schools in the 2013-14 Dr. Patrick R. Damore State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner's Cup standings after the fall season with a score of 6.32, as announced by the conference office.
The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets nine and so on. A team's regular-season finish is added to its postseason finish and divided by two for its final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the year.
SUNY Cortland leads the way with a score of 7.67, while SUNY Oneonta and SUNY Geneseo follow closely behind with scores of 7.39 and 7.35, respectively. After New Paltz, Buffalo State (6.1), SUNY Plattsburgh (5.62), SUNY Fredonia (5.25), The College at Brockport (5.07), SUNY Oswego (3.57) and SUNY Potsdam (2.95) round out the rest of the field.
The Hawks had two major areas of strength during the fall season: the field hockey team won its second consecutive SUNYAC title, doing so as the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC Field Hockey Tournament, and the women's volleyball team finished as the runner-up at the SUNYAC Volleyball Tournament after winning the regular-season title. In addition, women's tennis claimed runner-up honors as the SUNYAC Tennis Tournament for the third straight season. The women's cross country team placed fourth at the SUNYAC Cross Country Championships, while men's cross country took fifth in its 8K race. Men's soccer, which stayed in the SUNYAC Men's Soccer Tournament playoff hunt until the final day of the regular season, ended up tied for eighth in the SUNYAC standings, while women's soccer wound up 10th in the conference standings.
New Paltz has finished a department-best fourth in the Commissioner's Cup standings for two straight years.
New Paltz sponsors 14 sports affiliated with the SUNYAC: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming, women's tennis and women's volleyball. Cortland has won 16 of the 17 Commissioner's Cups awarded since the competition began during the 1996-97 academic year. Geneseo won the Commissioner's Cup in 2002-03.
