BUFFALO – The No. 9 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (9-1, 3-1 UVC) suffered its first loss of the 2013 season on Sunday on the second day of United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover action on Sunday at Medaille College, splitting its two matches. The Hawks lost, 3-2 (15-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-27, 12-16), to host and 14th-ranked Medaille (3-4, 2-1 UVC) in their first match of the day before topping D'Youville College (7-3, 2-2 UVC), 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-16), in the nightcap.
The Hawks' match against Medaille saw 22 lead changes and five tie scores. Both teams hit at a .256 clip in this back-and-forth battle, and both sides blocked evenly, too, with New Paltz posting 11.5 total team blocks to the Mavericks' 11. The Hawks were beaten soundly in the first set but came back to claim the next two. Medaille won a 27-25 nail biter in the fourth and capped off the five-set win with a 16-14 victory in the fifth.
Freshman outside hitter
Tim Ferriter (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit) paced the attack against Medaille, hitting .414 with 17 kills and five errors in 29 total attempts. Sophomore setter

Christopher Husmann (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) helped out the offense as well with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Freshman setter/right side

Victor Tuminelli (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) led the back row on defense with eight digs. Ferriter was busy at the net on defense, too, with eight total blocks for the match.
For Medaille, Erin Kelly had a match-high 14 kills, while Trevor Barrett and David Hill posted 11 and 10, respectively. David Riggsby doled out 28 assists, and Kelly boasted six total blocks.
New Paltz bounced back with a 3-0 blanking of D'Youville its final match of the weekend. It hit .391 against the Spartans, and it posted seven total blocks.
Against D'Youville, Ferriter led the team with 11 kills, while Smith posted a double-double with 17 assists and 12 digs. Lutjen split setting duties with Smith and collected 22 assists, and he also tallied three total blocks.
For D'Youville, Chris Temple paced the attack with seven kills, while Jay Senozetnik notched 22 assists. Brett Cawthorn led the defense with nine digs.
New Paltz faces a tough test on Wednesday, Feb. 13, as it takes on the Stevens Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
