No. 7 Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Eastern Mennonite, Cairn

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The No. 7 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team (14-4) enjoyed a pair of 3-0 non-conference sweeps against Eastern Mennonite University (11-5) and Cairn University (5-9) in a tri-match Saturday at Cairn. The Hawks posted winning set scores of 25-17, 25-18 and 25-23 against Eastern Mennonite and registered winning set scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-16 against Cairn.

New Paltz fashioned a .302 hitting percentage against Eastern Mennonite, and each team had six total blocks in the match. The Hawks were hurt by 10 service errors, but they made up for it with 43 kills.

Freshman outside hitter Tim Ferriter (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit) helped pace a balanced attack with nine kills, while sophomore setter John Lutjen (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and freshman setter/right side Christian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) boasted 22 and 20 assists, respectively. Ferriter also added six digs and three block assists.

For Eastern Mennonite, Jesse Reist collected seven kills, while John Barry doled out 22 assists. Chris Moise and Barry each tallied five digs, while Barry, Kyle Storc and John Grove recorded three block assists apiece.

The Hawks had similar success against host Cairn in the nightcap, hitting at a .338 clip compared to the Highlanders' .073 hitting percentage. Cairn was done in by 24 attacking errors, and the Hawks also outblocked the Highlanders, 7.0-4.0.

Ferriter once again ignited the New Paltz offense with 10 kills, while Smith and Lutjen handed out 14 and 11 assists, respectively. Lutjen provided a team-high six digs, while senior outside hitter Bryan Weber (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville), Ferriter, freshman middle blocker Christopher Husmann (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Smith each totaled two blocks.

For Cairn, Noah Prickett and Stephen Hirsch floored 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Jon Wilson provided 28 assists. Nate Seidle was involved in all four of the Highlanders' blocks, posting four block assists, while Prickett collected eight digs.

New Paltz returns to United Volleyball Conference (UVC) action on Wednesday, March 6, as it takes on Vassar College at 7 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
