KINGSTON, N.Y. – Playing at Dietz Stadium for the second time in three days on Monday, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (3-1) had a much different experience compared to its loss to Vassar College on Saturday, as the Hawks prevailed, 16-5, over non-conference Mount Saint Mary College (6-4).
New Paltz got on the board three times in the first seven minutes of play, receiving goals from sophomore midfielder
Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston), junior midfielder
Mariam Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and junior attack player
Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton). Valdivia and sophomore attack player
Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) each found the back of the net to give the Hawks a 5-0 advantage, but Kaileen Spadaro scored for the Knights with 10:49 remaining in the first half to erase the shutout bid. New Paltz went on an eight-goal tear to close the period, and it took a 13-1 lead into the intermission.
After more than five minutes of scoreless action, Mount Saint Mary's Ela Igdeler scored the first goal of the second half, but Tesler answered nearly three minutes later to push the cushion back out to 12. Back-to-back markers by Nicole Scicutella made it a 10-goal contest, but sophomore midfielder
Fatima Ismail (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) and freshman attack player
Alexa Vitale (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall Central) each scored to push the advantage back out to 12. Scicutella completed the hat trick with 1:06 left to play, and that provided the final margin.
New Paltz outshot Mount Saint Mary by a 28-13 edge, and it went 11-for-16 on clear attempts compared to the Knights' 9-for-14 performance. The Hawks also held the advantage in ground balls (22-19) and draw controls (16-7).
Sophomore midfielder
Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place), Tesler and Valdivia registered three goals each, while Healy and senior attack player
Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y./North Shore) added a pair of markers apiece. F. Ismail, M. Ismail and Vitale also added goals to the Hawks' cause. Valdivia distributed a game-high three assists, while F. Ismail and Healy chipped in with two each. Tesler boasted one assist as well. Citro controlled a game-high seven draws and had a game-high two caused turnovers, while Tornatore and Healy provided four ground balls apiece.
Scicutella paced Mount Saint Mary with three goals, while Igdeler and Spadaro tallied one marker each. Erica Massmann and Katie McGinnis scooped up a game-high-tying four ground balls apiece.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) did not see much action in net, making two stops in the winning effort, while her counterpart, Deirdre Ray, turned aside seven shots and absorbed the loss.
New Paltz is on the road on Wednesday, March 27, as it visits non-conference Ramapo College for a 3 p.m. opening draw.
