MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team (4-2, 1-0 SUNYAC) set the tone early with seven goals in the first half and rode out that momentum en route to an 11-0 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC)-opening win over Morrisville State College (0-6, 0-1 SUNYAC) on Wednesday afternoon at Drake Field.
The Hawks tied their program record for goals in a game (11), which they set on Friday against Ramapo College. Their victory over Morrisville State, however, established a new program mark for largest margin of victory (11), edging their former standard of 10 that was also set on Friday against Ramapo.
New Paltz dominated the game statistically, holding a 47-0 edge in shots. The Hawks also took 13 penalty corners to the Mustangs' zero.
Sophomore forward
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) paced the Hawk offense with three goals. Senior forward
Alicia Aragosa (Schenectady, N.Y./Niskayuna) and freshman forward/midfielder
Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane) each boasted two markers, while senior forward
Danielle Conklin (Suffern, N.Y./Suffern), sophomore defender
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East), senior midfielder
Alyssa Stock (Morris Plains, N.J./Whippany Park) and freshman forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) all finished with one goal. Stock added two assists, while junior forward
Alex Gallo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), freshman forward/midfielder
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and Caruana posted one helper each.
Ackerman opened the game by scoring unassisted twice in the opening 10 minutes of play. Conklin added a goal seven minutes later, while Aragosa and Ackerman scored before the 30-minute mark to make it a 5-0 tally in favor of the visitors. Aragosa and Roemer rattled the back of the cage within 25 seconds of each other in the 31st minute to give the Hawk a 7-0 lead heading into the break.
Stock scored 53 seconds into the second half, while Caruana netted her first goal of the game at 44:29. Roemer notched her second goal at 49:04, while Landy put away the contest's final marker at 53:48.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) drew the start in between the posts for the Hawks and did not face a single shot in the winning effort. Nicole Gregg turned aside 13 shots in the losing effort, seeing action in the first half for the Mustangs, while Meaghan Mack made four second-half saves.
New Paltz wraps up its three-game road swing on Saturday, Sept. 21, as it visits the 16th-ranked University of Rochester for a 12 p.m. non-conference tilt.
