Men’s Soccer Grabs First Win with 2-1 Victory over West Conn

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior forward Bernardo Menendez (Buenos Aires, Argentina/San Martin de Tours) scored a penalty kick goal to give the Hawks their first home victory, as the State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team (1-3-2) took down Western Connecticut State University (2-4-0), 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Menendez scored the game-winner in the 76th minute on a penalty kick after a Western Connecticut handball in the box. The score was Menendez's team-leading third of the season.

Sophomore midfielder Jake Falk (Jericho, N.Y./Jericho) got the Hawks on the board in the 24th minute with his first goal of the year. Falk was set up by a beautiful deep pass from midfield by Menendez to the top of the box.

The Colonials tied the game in the 66th minute when a New Paltz defender attempted to clear the ball away from the box. The ball went backwards toward the net and took an awkward hop around the goalkeeper for an own goal that tied the game.

Junior goalkeeper Steven Domino (Valatie, N.Y./Ichabod Crane) made five saves en route to his first win of the year. Colonial goalkeeper Bobby Strevel stopped six shots, but allowed two goals to shoulder the loss.

Senior midfielder Hobie Ramin (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) fired off six shots on the afternoon to lead the Hawks to a 21-10 advantage in shots. The Hawks also held a slight advantage in corner kicks, earning three to the Colonials' two.

The Hawks return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 24, when they host Union (N.Y.) College. The action is set to kick off from Alumni Field at 4:30 p.m.
