Women’s Soccer Plays Cortland to Scoreless Stalemate

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – A defensive battle ensued Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team (2-5-3, 0-1-1 SUNYAC) played SUNY Cortland (2-3-4, 0-1-1 SUNYAC) to a 0-0 tie after two halves and two overtime periods. Following the second overtime frame, Cortland won, 5-4, in a penalty kick shootout, which is conducted following every draw in SUNYAC play to create a tiebreaker in the conference standings.

Despite the fact that the Red Dragons won the penalty-kick shootout, it has no bearing on the Hawks' overall record, nor does it discredit their tie.

New Paltz's best opportunity to net the game-winner came in the second overtime period, as sophomore midfielder Kristina Gandolfo (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) had a breakaway and created a one-on-one opportunity with the Cortland goalkeeper. She wound up misfiring to the right of the goal, and the Hawks were unable to get a shot off for the rest of the contest.

Cortland outshot New Paltz by a 12-2 margin, and the Red Dragons took four corner kicks to the Hawks' three.

Sophomore goalkeeper Krysten Kane (Macedon, N.Y./Wayne Central) and Rachel Axt each posted clean sheets in the draw. Kane made three stops, while Axt turned aside one shot as the keeper of record for Cortland.

Neither team's goalkeeper was tested in the shootout. Cortland, which inserted goalkeeper Taylor Hudson into the game for the shootout, scored on all five of its attempts, while the Hawks' lone miss happened after a shot hit the crossbar in the second round.

New Paltz opens up a five-game road swing on Friday, Oct. 4, as it takes on The College at Brockport in a SUNYAC contest.
