BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team (15-5, 3-0 SUNYAC) won twice on the second day of the first round of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play at The College at Brockport on Saturday, winning, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-19), against SUNY Geneseo before topping SUNY Fredonia, 3-1 (25-22, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23).
New Paltz joins Buffalo State and SUNY Potsdam as the only unbeaten teams following the first weekend of league play.
Against Geneseo, sophomore outside hitter
Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) led the way with 14 kills and 13 digs, while senior setter
Marissa King (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) also notched a double-double with 28 assists and 24 digs. Freshman middle hitter
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) reinforced the front row defensively with five totals blocks (two solo, three assist).
In the Fredonia match, Borquist paced the Hawks with 15 kills and 21 digs, while junior outside hitter
Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) corralled a team-high 24 digs. In addition to Borquist, senior middle hitter
Liz Hauser (East Williston, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) and King had double-doubles. Hauser tallied 12 kills and 10 digs, while King notched 47 assists and 18 digs.
New Paltz opens up a five-match home stand on Wednesday, Oct. 2, as it takes on Baruch College in a 7 p.m. non-conference match at the Hawk Center.
