Women’s Swimming Trails Geneseo, Leads RIT After Day 1 of Tri-Meet

GENESEO, N.Y. – After day one of competition at a two-day tri-meet hosted by SUNY Geneseo on Friday, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team trails host Geneseo, 108-51, and leads the Rochester Institute of Technology, 109-53.
 
Senior Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) was a double-event winner on day one, touching first in the 200 individual medley (2:17.87) before winning the 1,650 freestyle (18:08.52). Allocco, who was nearly a minute faster at Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Winter Championships a month ago, holds the State University of New York Athletic Conference's (SUNYAC) top time in the 1,650 freestyle.
 
Buoyed by a 1:58.47 200 freestyle split from Allocco in the 800 freestyle relay, the Hawks went a second-place time of 8:08.80 in the event. Sophomore Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central), junior Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) and senior Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) joined Allocco on the relay, with Allocco swimming the third leg.
 
Junior Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) and sophomore Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark) took 2-3 in the 100 breaststroke, with Granan clocking a 1:10.66 and VerMeersch charting a 1:14.42. Griger took third in the 100 backstroke (1:03.71), while freshman Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) placed third in the 1,650 freestyle (19:18.33).
 
New Paltz's 200 freestyle relay team of Griger, VerMeersch, sophomore Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Scalise posted a second-place standard of 1:42.11, while the Hawks' 200 medley relay contingent of sophomore Casey O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Granan, sophomore Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and Scalise turned in a second-place time of 1:55.68.
 
Action concludes at the tri-meet tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
