Men’s Swimming Dominant in 111-79 Triumph over Mt. St. Mary

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team won nine of the 11 events contested Friday afternoon in a dual meet against Mount Saint Mary College, and the Hawks wound up winning by a 111-79 final at Elting Pool. It marked the Hawks' final home meet of the 2013-14 season.
 
Senior Matt Distler (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) claimed three individual events. He charted the top time in the 200 freestyle (1:49.51) before touching first in the 500 freestyle (4:58.25) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.43). His 100 breaststroke swim came as an exhibition entry.
 
New Paltz rises to 2-5 and returns to the pool tomorrow, as it visits SUNY Oneonta for a 1 p.m. meet. Mount Saint Mary falls to 4-6 and takes on The College at Old Westbury and the College of Mount Saint Vincent tomorrow afternoon at the Kaplan Center.
 
Beyond Distler, sophomore Rod Taskindoust (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown North), freshman Luke Zenir (Cherry Valley, N.Y./Cooperstown Central), sophomore Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and sophomore Ryan Lindgren (Hurley, N.Y./Kingston) won individual events for New Paltz. Taskindoust touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:41.11), Zenir topped the field in the 50 freestyle (23.17), Cooke won the 100 butterfly (56.61) and Lindgren captured the 100 freestyle (52.41).
 
New Paltz won both relays, too. Freshman Andrew Grant (Akron, N.Y./Akron), freshman Vitaut Gurskiy (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), sophomore Tom Anderson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Cooke combined for the top time in the 200 medley relay (1:47.55), while the foursome of Grant, Taskindoust, freshman Thomas Whittico (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Lindgren clocked the fastest standard in the 200 freestyle relay (1:33.29). The Hawks marked its 200 freestyle relay as exhibition.
