Potent Brockport Offense Subdues Women’s Lacrosse, 22-13

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – In the early stages of Saturday's women's lacrosse game between the State University of New York at New Paltz and The College at Brockport, the Hawks were poised for an upset, keeping pace with the No. 18 nationally-ranked Golden Eagles. But the hosts solidified their national status with a 22-13 victory under bright skies and pleasant conditions in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action.

The Hawks held an early 4-2 lead and had the game tied at 8-8 following a goal by senior attack Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) with 4:24 until halftime. Brockport scored the final three goals of the half in the final 2:16 of play and then parlayed eight straight goals in the first 13 minutes of the second half to build a strong 19-8 lead with 17:29 to play. New Paltz answered with three quick goals, two coming from junior midfielder Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point), but Brockport's lead was sizable, although the Hawks kept fighting until the final buzzer.

The loss drops New Paltz to 4-5, 1-3 SUNYAC. Brockport improves to 8-4, 2-3. The Hawks return to the Turf Field on Tuesday, April 15, hosting SUNY Oneonta at 3 p.m. Brockport next hosts SUNY Geneseo on April 15 at 4 p.m.

The Hawks were clearly upset-minded in the first half, trailing 11-8 at intermission. A goal by junior attack Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) put New Paltz ahead 4-2 at the 19:14 mark. In a seesaw battle, the first half was tied five times, the last coming at 8-8 when the Golden Eagles made their game-changing statement. Brockport freshman attack Kelly Wall gave her team a 9-8 lead with 2:18 until halftime, the Golden Eagles tacked on two additional goals – the last just six seconds before halftime – and Brockport never relinquished its control of the game.

Tesler had five goals for New Paltz and Healy added three. Junior midfielder Lianne Valdivia (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and Healy each had four groundballs. In goal, junior Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had 15 saves
