NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Faced against Empire 8 champion Ithaca College in a non-conference match on Saturday at the North Tennis Courts, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team punctuated dual-match play in 2013-14 with a 6-3 win.
 
New Paltz rises to 12-7 overall and closes out the season by hosting its annual doubles-only tournament on Saturday, April 26. Ithaca drops to 12-4 overall and takes on The College of New Jersey tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Ewing, N.J.
 
The Hawks put themselves in the driver's seat heading into singles play, sweeping through doubles. Freshman Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and sophomore Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) ensured the 3-0 sweep of doubles by prevailing, 8-6, at flight three.
 
In singles, Ithaca won hard-fought matches at all of the top three flights, but New Paltz's strong play at flights four through six sealed the win. Freshman Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) provided the largest margin of victory at any of the singles flights, winning, 6-1, 6-2, over her counterpart at flight four.
