Women’s Lacrosse Topped, 17-5, by Fredonia

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Despite scoring three of the five final goals of the first half, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team was unable to find an answer against SUNY Fredonia in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Saturday at University Stadium, falling by a 17-5 final.
 
New Paltz won the draw control battle, 13-11, but Fredonia held a 38-15 edge in shots. Both teams combined to go 14-for-14 on clear attempts.
 
New Paltz drops to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. The Hawks next visit Farmingdale State College on Tuesday, April 8, for a 4 p.m. game. Fredonia rises to 8-2 overall, 2-0 SUNYAC, stretching its win streak to eight. The Blue Devils next take on SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, April 8, at 4 p.m.
 
Fredonia set the tempo early, jumping out to a 7-1 lead midway through the first half. The Hawks responded with a pair of goals a minute apart from junior midfielder/defender Julia Johnson (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) and junior attack/midfielder Kelsey Healy (Central Islip, N.Y./Bay Shore) to cut the deficit to four, but Fredonia reclaimed the six-goal advantage with a pair of scores under 10 minutes in the first half. Senior attack Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) uncorked an unassisted goal with 1:49 to go before halftime to draw New Paltz within five (9-4) heading into the intermission.
 
The Blue Devils continued to generate offense in the second half, scoring eight goals total in the period. Junior midfielder Carissa Citro (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) provided the Hawks' lone score of the stanza with 16:32 remaining in the period.
 
Healy paced the Hawk attack with two goals, while Citro, Tesler and Johnson each had one. Citro also added an assist. Johnson applied strong defensive pressure en route to finishing with three caused turnovers, while Citro and Healy each finished with four draw controls.
 
Freshman midfielder Katie Kleine netted a game-high six goals and added four assists to lead Fredonia. Junior midfielder Marissa Cussins notched four goals and two assists, while freshman attack Sam Owen had three goals.
 
Junior goalkeeper Jackie Ulanoff (Northport, N.Y./Northport) made a game-high 11 saves for the Hawks in the loss, while Fredonia's freshman goalkeeper Christina Mathewson earned the win, making six stops in 43:53 of work.
