Women’s Volleyball Takes Vassar Tournament Title with Day 2 Sweep

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – After a thrilling first day at the Vassar Tournament, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team took home the event's title following two wins on Saturday. The Hawks, who were 4-0 at the tournament, downed the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-14), before topping host Vassar College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-16).

Senior libero Katy Herbst (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) was named the Tournament MVP, while junior outside hitter Becca Borquist (Rhinebeck, N.Y./Rhinebeck) joined Herbst on the All-Tournament Team.

New Paltz rises to 6-2 overall and returns to action from Friday-Saturday, Sept. 12-13, at the 12th-annual Hawks Invitational at the Hawk Center. Mount Saint Vincent falls to 0-4 and next competes at Ramapo College's Roadrunner Invitational on Friday, Sept. 12, while Vassar falls to 2-3 and visits Williams College on Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.

New Paltz 3, Mount Saint Vincent 0

New Paltz overpowered Mount Saint Vincent offensively, hitting .351 compared to the Dolphins' -.134 clip. The Hawks also landed 13 service aces during the match.

The contest saw just two lead changes, both of which occurred in the third set. In addition, every Hawk student-athlete saw action on the court.

Sophomore outside hitters Chantal Ramhorst (Woodcliff Lake, N.J./Pascack Hills) and Katy Braddon (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua Academy) paced the attack with six kills each, while freshman setters Maddie Zwickl (Chester, N.Y./Warwick Valley) and Melannie Aquino (Billerica, Mass./Burlington) handed out 17 and 10 assists, respectively. Herbst defended eight digs, while Braddon landed four service aces.

For Mount Saint Vincent, junior middle hitter Ashleigh Scozzari floored a team-high six kills, while freshman setter Nicole Henderson doled out nine assists and collected seven digs.

New Paltz 3, Vassar 0

New Paltz received a tougher test in its second match of the day, but the Hawks' talent and depth ultimately pushed them to the win.

The Hawks held the upper hand in hitting (.193-.081), blocking (6-4) and service aces (13-5), and they limited the Brewers to just a -.067 hitting percentage in the third set. The lead changed hands just twice during the match, both of which occurred in the third stanza.

Sophomore middle hitter Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) keyed the Hawk attack with six kills, while Zwickl distributed 11 assists. Borquist defended 10 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Anna Paulik (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Aquino each floored four service aces.

Senior hitter Taylor Mosley totaled a match-high eight kills for Vassar, while senior hitter Clara Cardillo floored six kills and hit .308. Freshman setter Sophia Tiajoloff dished out 10 assists, while junior libero Chloe Hallum corralled 13 digs.
