Field Hockey Ava Yurchison, Athletic Communications Intern

Senior Spotlight: Five Questions with Dani Ackerman

New Paltz athletic communications intern Ava Yurchison caught up with senior Dani Ackerman of the New Paltz field hockey team for the week nine release of the 2015-16 Senior Spotlight series that will have a new senior interviewed every Monday.

Q: What drew you to New Paltz?
A: "Honestly, I had been looking at Cortland for a long time, and then at the last second, Coach Vitale asked me to come on a visit. I came for an overnight, watched a game, hung out with the team and got to go to their pasta party, and it really made me excited to come here because they were so welcoming and inviting to freshmen. It just seemed like a good program to be associated with."

Q: If you could play any other position on the field, what would you want to try?
A: "I want to try goalie really badly because I think you need to be kind of crazy. I'm so used to going up and playing defense, and being a goalie would be really cool."

Q: Being that your sister [Samantha] is on the team this season, how do you plan on being a leader toward her?
A: "I think she is already striving toward what New Paltz field hockey is about because she has seen it in the past. I think just helping her get to where she wants to be and working with her to reach her goals will help. She's really good at taking my advice and listening to what I have to say. She respects me a lot, and just being that good role model who always helps her on the field goes a long way."

Q: Why do you think your team has had so much success?
A: "I think we just have a lot of team chemistry; that sets us apart from other teams. I think we work harder than a lot of the other teams we face. We just push each other harder and expect a lot from each other."

Q: Where do you see yourself after New Paltz?
A: "After New Paltz, I definitely see myself going to grad school. I'm looking to become a speech pathologist, so I'm going to get my master's degree in speech. Hopefully I can do something where I can coach and practice speech because I can't really see my life without field hockey."
