NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team seeks its return to the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament after falling to SUNY Cortland in the semifinals last year.

Despite losing the talents of Shannan Walker and Ashley Reifenhauser to graduation, 10th-year head coach Jamie Seward and fourth-year assistant Darren Jackson look to the Hawks' 10 veterans and three newcomers to improve on last season's success.

"The major thing we are about as a program is leadership," said Seward. " We don't just rely on our captains, we expect everybody, at given times, to step up whether you're a senior or a freshman who has only been here for a week.

"There are going to be times when you are expected to lead and you may not be the leader, but you're expected to be a leader."

Seward returns a handful of seniors for the 2015-16 campaign including guard Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and forward Ana Morel (New York City, N.Y./IN-Tech Academy 368). Harrison started in 26 of 27 games last season, posting 95 rebounds for an average of 2.7 rebounds per game. Morel appeared in nine games in the 2014-15 season and has been named captain alongside Harrison.

Senior guard/forward Colleen Ames (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and senior guard Dariah Duncan (New York City, N.Y./Aquinas) also return for their final season. Ames saw action in all 27 games last season, averaging 7.8 points per game and finished with a 66.7 free throw percentage and 25 steals. Duncan, a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas College, appeared in 14 games for the Hawks last season.

In the junior class, guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and forward Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) were also named captains. Small was the leading scorer for New Paltz last season, averaging 12 points per game, 2.2 assists per game and 0.4 blocks per game and scored double figures in 15 of the final 16 contests of the 2014-15 campaign. Irby appeared in 23 games for New Paltz last season and led the team in rebounds, posting 7.5 rebounds per game.

Several sophomore standouts from last season return for their second round in the Hawk Center, including guard/forward Jasmine Bryant (Elmont, N.Y./St. Mary's College Prep) and guard Laura Stuart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue). Bryant returns having played in all 27 games last season, averaging 9.7 minutes, 3.7 points and 1.0 steal per game while Stuart averaged 15.4 minutes per game, 5.6 rebounds per game, and 4.3 points per game in 26 appearances. Sophomore forward Stephanie Volpe (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and sophomore guard Sydney Pinn (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) also return to the court after strong first year performances off the bench.

Junior guard Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) joins the Hawks for her first season after primarily playing on the New Paltz women's volleyball team for the past three years and is predicted to be key component on the court for the Hawks this season.

Making their debut for New Paltz are freshmen guards Taylor Howell (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Lindsay Bettke (Pelham, N.Y./The Ursuline School) and freshman forward Jade Kell (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington).

The Hawks open their 2015-16 season Nov. 13-14 at the Skidmore Tournament with the first contest against the host Thoroughbreds on Friday at 6 p.m. New Paltz will then compete in their home opener against Ithaca College on Wednesday, Nov. 18 before competing in back-to-back road games against Hartwick College on Nov. 23 and Mount Saint Mary College on Nov. 24.

After the Hawks host New York University on Dec. 1, they will host SUNYAC contests Dec. 5-6 against SUNY Plattsburgh and Potsdam, respectively before facing Vassar College on Dec. 8 in the Hawk Center.

New Paltz resumes conference play when it plays SUNY Cortland, The College at Brockport and SUNY Geneseo Jan. 5-9 and SUNY Oneonta, SUNY Fredonia and Buffalo State Jan. 15-24. The Hawks then head out on the road for five straight conference games before returning to the Hawk Center Feb. 9-13. New Paltz concludes its regular season on the road Feb. 19-20.

The SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals take place on Feb. 23 with the semifinals and finals set occurring from Feb. 26 -27.
