Â
Despite losing the talents of
Shannan Walker and Ashley Reifenhauser to graduation, 10
th-year head coach
Jamie Seward and fourth-year assistant
Darren Jackson look to the Hawks' 10 veterans and three newcomers to improve on last season's success.
Â
"The major thing we are about as a program is leadership," said Seward. " We don't just rely on our captains, we expect everybody, at given times, to step up whether you're a senior or a freshman who has only been here for a week.
Â
"There are going to be times when you are expected to lead and you may not be the leader, but you're expected to be a leader."
Â
Seward returns a handful of seniors for the 2015-16 campaign including guard
Goldie Harrison (Elmont, N.Y./Elmont Memorial) and forward
Ana Morel (New York City, N.Y./IN-Tech Academy 368). Harrison started in 26 of 27 games last season, posting 95 rebounds for an average of 2.7 rebounds per game. Morel appeared in nine games in the 2014-15 season and has been named captain alongside Harrison.
Â
Senior guard/forward
Colleen Ames (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and senior guard
Dariah Duncan (New York City, N.Y./Aquinas) also return for their final season. Ames saw action in all 27 games last season, averaging 7.8 points per game and finished with a 66.7 free throw percentage and 25 steals. Duncan, a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas College, appeared in 14 games for the Hawks last season.
Â
In the junior class, guard/forward
Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) and forward
Courtney Irby (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) were also named captains. Small was the leading scorer for New Paltz last season, averaging 12 points per game, 2.2 assists per game and 0.4 blocks per game and scored double figures in 15 of the final 16 contests of the 2014-15 campaign. Irby appeared in 23 games for New Paltz last season and led the team in rebounds, posting 7.5 rebounds per game.
Â

Stephanie Volpe (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) and sophomore guard
Sydney Pinn (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) also return to the court after strong first year performances off the bench.
Â
Junior guard
Morgan Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) joins the Hawks for her first season after primarily playing on the New Paltz women's volleyball team for the past three years and is predicted to be key component on the court for the Hawks this season.
