Men's Soccer alumni Hughes and DiMatteo representing SUNY New Paltz in armed forces

The State University of New York at New Paltz has a long tradition of honoring 1966 alumnus Marine Corps 2nd Lt. Heinz Ahlmeyer who was killed in action on May 10, 1967, less than one year after graduating. Half a century later, there continues to be a SUNY New Paltz men's soccer presence in the United States military.

Since their commencement in 2016, former co-captains Angelo DiMatteo and Joe Hughes have dedicated their post-collegiate careers to the armed forces. DiMatteo graduated boot camp for the United States Army on Aug. 11 and Hughes is currently in California undergoing the final phase of his entry-level training for the United States Marine Corps.

Although Hughes wanted to experience the college lifestyle and continue playing soccer, joining the military was always in the back of his mind.

Hughes was inspired by several relatives who have served in the Marine Corps, including his cousin Chris, who is currently serving.

"When it was coming close to graduating college I realized that it was now or never for me," Hughes said. "So I went to a Marine recruiter and asked him a bunch of questions and after I couldn't think of a reason not to do it."

After graduating, DiMatteo originally worked for Cintas Corporation as a lead sales representative. Although he enjoyed the experience, DiMatteo knew he would not reach his full potential sitting behind a desk, so he decided to take on the physical and mental challenges of the armed forces.

DiMatteo said that Hughes was also part of his inspiration to enlist in the army, while his experience as a Hawk helped prepared him to endure the challenge.

"Being a leader as well as part of a team throughout my collegiate soccer career had also influenced my decision to join an even bigger team, the United States military." DiMatteo said.

During his time at boot camp, DiMatteo was selected as platoon leader, received an Iron Man award and was named Soldier of the Cycle. He credited his self-discipline, leadership, and competitive skills, which he claims aid him every day in his journey as a member of the armed forces, to his experience as an athlete at SUNY New Paltz.

Hughes also cites graduating from boot camp as his greatest accomplishment in his career thus far, describing it as the most physically and mentally demanding three months of his life.

"I still get the chills when I think about graduation day," he said. "Proudest moment of my life."

Their typical days consist of physical training in the morning, followed by an early breakfast and then class or tactical training for the day until dinner. Hughes also said he is enjoying exploring the state of California in his free time.

Both DiMatteo and Hughes look back fondly on their time as a Hawk and encourage all student-athletes to enjoy the experience. DiMatteo claims his captainship with Hughes is his favorite memory from his time at SUNY New Palts, while Hughes cites their 2-1 win at Cortland during their senior season.

Hughes advises to always be hungry and that a closed mouth never gets fed.

"Constantly be asking questions," Hughes said. "Find out all the ways you can improve yourself on and off the field, court or pool. If you're put in a leadership position, demand the most out of your team."
