WILKES-BARRE, PA- The New Paltz women's lacrosse team picked up their first win of the season over King's College, 14-10 Wednesday night. King's College falls to 0-5 on the season.
DelGaudio gave the Hawks the quick 1-0 lead just 23 seconds into the game. Bennett and Rehain scored back-to-back goals to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead at the 21:30 mark. Shannon Ellis put the Lady Monarchs on the board at the 20:39 mark with a goal. The Hawks answered back with two straight from Erin Tornatore and Bennett to give the Hawks a 5-1 advantage. After three straight goals from the Lady Monarachs, DelGaudio scored at the end of the half.
In the first half, the Hawks were led by Samantha DelGaudio with three goals and Brittany Bennett tallied two. Julianne Rehain scored one and assisted on one as the Hawks took a 6-4 lead into the half.
The Hawks jumped out quickly in the second half to push their lead to 9-4 on goals from DelGaudio, Brittany Hunt and Bridgitte Hooker. After a goal from the Lady Monarachs to cut the lead to 9-5, Bennett tallied back-to-back goals 22 seconds apart to put the Hawks back up by six at 11-5. The Lady Monarchs mounted a come back, scoring five of the next seven goals to pull within three at 13-10. Julia Donato gave the Hawks an insurance goal at the 1:13 mark, which sealed the deal for the Hawks.
Bennett finished with four goals and DelGaudio had three goals and assisted on another. Hooker added two goals and Rehain had one goal and assisted on two.
Margaret DeLauter recorded the win in net, turning away six shots after facing 27 on the night. The Hawks improve to 1-1 on the season and return to action on Friday at cross town rival Vassar with a 4 p.m. game start.
