FREDONIA, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz finished sixth in the final State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Commissioner's Cup standings for the 2009-10 academic year with an average score of 5.64 points, as announced Tuesday by the conference office.
New Paltz, despite sponsoring the second-fewest conference sports in the league at 14, had a strong showing across the board. Seven different Hawk teams earned at least a share of fourth in their final SUNYAC standings, which included women's volleyball's first-ever conference championship. Women's tennis finished among the top two for the eighth time in as many years, while women's basketball reached the SUNYAC Championship game as the No. 3 seed.
The New Paltz men's volleyball team, which competes in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA), does not count toward the Commissioner's Cup standings since men's volleyball is not a sport sponsored by the SUNYAC.
SUNY Cortland won the Commissioner's Cup for the 13th time in 14 years with an average score of 8.46 points.
Commissioner's Cup points are awarded based on each team's finish in the SUNYAC standings, both during the regular season and in league postseason tournaments, when applicable. The first-place school in each sport receives 10 points, second place receives nine points, and so on. A school's regular-season finish is added to its postseason finish and is divided by two to determine the points for each sport. The total points earned are then divided by the number of conference sports the school sponsors.
