DelGaudio Sets All-Time Points Record in New Paltz’s 12-8 Loss to Scranton

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – Junior attack player Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) set the program's all-time record for career points with three goals and two assists against the University of Scranton (6-2) on Wednesday afternoon, but the State University of New York at New Paltz women's lacrosse team (5-1) had its five-game win streak to start the 2011 season snapped, losing by a 12-8 final in a non-conference contest.

DelGaudio finished the day with 113 career points, which breaks Katie Sharp's former mark of 109 that she set from 1999-2002.

Scranton opened up a 6-0 lead on the Hawks in the first half, and DelGaudio and senior midfielder Bridgitte Hooker (Glens Falls, N.Y.) netted back-to-back goals to cut the gap to four. Scranton's Caroline Pryor made it a 7-2 score, but junior midfielder Julia Donato (Fayetteville, N.Y.) found the back of the net with 1:23 remaining in the first stanza to send New Paltz into the break trailing by four goals at 7-3.

The Royals scored twice to open the second half, but senior midfielder Brittany Bennett (Smithtown, N.Y.) and DelGaudio brought the deficit back down to four. After two more Scranton goals, the Hawks once again trimmed the margin down to four at 11-7. Unable to produce a rally in the late goings of the game, New Paltz scored just once in the final 10 minutes, as Donato buried her second marker of the contest with 2:37 remaining in regulation to spell out the final tally.

Scranton outshot New Paltz, 24-23, and also went 19-of-22 on clear attempts compared to the Hawks' 13-of-19 mark. New Paltz was 1-for-1 on free-position shots, while Scranton was 2-for-4. The Hawks were superior off the draw, claiming 14 of the game's 21 draw controls.

DelGaudio's five points (3 goals, 2 assists) led the Hawks on offense, and Donato added a pair of goals. Freshman midfielder Talia Tesler (Rochester, N.Y.), Hooker and Bennett also scored for New Paltz. In addition, Hooker was credited with one assist. Sophomore midfielder Erin Tornatore (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and Donato led the team in ground balls with four each, while Tornatore snared a game-high five draw controls. Defensively, Hooker and Donato both caused a game-high two turnovers. In between the posts, junior goalkeeper Stefanie Mignone (Farmingville, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss, turning aside six shots in a full 60 minutes of action.

For Scranton, Kerry Sullivan paced the attack with four goals, while Katie Slade and Pryor each chipped in two. Deanna Giorno, Jilliana DePaolera, Kaela Mahon and Kristin Pickell rounded out the Royals' goal scorers. Giorno and Pryor had multiple assists, dishing out three and two, respectively. Katie Slade picked up a game-high five ground balls and shared the team-high in draw controls (2) with Sullivan. Kathleen Smart picked up the win in net for Scranton, halting six shots in a full 60 minutes of play.

The Hawks open State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play on Saturday, April 2, against SUNY Fredonia in Fredonia, N.Y. The opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
