Vizvary Selected as Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach

NEW PALTZ, N.Y.George Vizvary, the legendary former Ulster County Community College head coach who produced 45 professional players and 52 All-Americans during his 42-year tenure in the position, has been named the assistant men's soccer coach at the State University of New York at New Paltz for the 2014 season, announced Monday by the Department of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation.
 
"George is an incredible guy with a great soccer mindset," stated head coach Gene Ventriglia. "He has been a mentor to me both as a player and coach and this will be a great experience to work together this season."
 
"George will put his print on the program; he is always a success wherever he goes," Ventriglia continued. "His level of expertise and tactical knowledge will be greatly beneficial."
 
Vizvary served as the head coach at Ulster from 1968-2010, winning two National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) national titles and making 17 national tournament appearances. Vizvary accumulated a record of 534-159-28 during his tenure in Stone Ridge, the most wins in the history of community college soccer, while also winning 24 Mid-Hudson Conference titles and 17 Region XV championships.
 
For his accomplishments, Vizvary was inducted into the NJCAA Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007. In addition to his coaching duties at Ulster, Vizvary was a professor of engineering from 1968-96 and served as the department chair from 1983-94.
 
Vizvary has held several professional and collegiate coaching positions, including service as the head coach of the University at Albany women's soccer program from 1996-99.
 
Vizvary earned his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Institute of Technology in Gyor, Hungary in 1955. Vizvary played professionally in Hungary as well as for the Hungarian National Team.
 
"I am looking forward to working alongside Gene since we have memories that go back several decades," Vizvary stated. "This is a great opportunity to see what we can do together and an exciting situation."
 
"I have high expectations for this year," Vizvary continued. "I am looking forward to connecting with the players and working with a new team, providing leadership, integrity and commitment. I want to be successful and add to Gene's success as well."
 
The 2014 men's soccer season kicks off on Saturday, Aug. 30, as the Hawks play at The College at Old Westbury.
