Special Olympics Basketball Tournament (April 12)

On Sunday April 12, the New Paltz Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted a Special Olympics-affiliated series of basketball games played in both Elting Gym and the Hawk Center.
The 14 teams that competed were made up of New Paltz student-athletes, Special Olympics members and people associated with the Special Olympics Committee. The student-athletes spent weekday nights practicing with these teams leading up to the event.
Women's Volleyball at Rondout Animal Shelter (April 11)

On Saturday, April 11, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's volleyball team helped out at the Rondout Animal Shelter, where they did some work around the grounds and spent a day with the sheltered animals.
SAAC Leaf Rake (Nov. 8-9)

From Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 8-9, student-athletes from various New Paltz varsity athletics teams went out in the community and raked leaves as a part of the department's annual Leaf Rake.
The aim of the project is to aid senior citizens in clearing their properties of leaves, and the initiative began approximately nine years ago. Members of SAAC were instrumental in the planning of the event.
New Paltz Walk Against Rape (Oct. 19)

On Sunday, Oct. 19, at 12 p.m., numerous student-athletes participated in the New Paltz Walk Against Rape held on the concourse of the Student Union Building. The event, which was organized by the Student Association, including juniors Christine Rivera and Ana Morel from the women's basketball team, took place to raise awareness about rape and sexual assault. On Thursday, Oct. 16, an informational meeting was held to discuss involvement with the event as well as rape culture and President Barack Obama's national "It's On Us" campaign.
Elting Library Book Fair (Sept. 25-28)

From Thursday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 28, over 150 New Paltz student-athletes assisted in the Elting Library Book Fair. Every athletic team on campus had representation over the four-day fair at the downtown New Paltz library and aided in the set-up, sales and breakdown of the event. The student-athletes organized different shifts and were greatly helpful in the breakdown on Sunday afternoon.
