WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. – For the 11th time in the history of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), the SUNY Geneseo women's cross country team captured the conference title, doing so by accumulating 36 points on Saturday at the 2011 SUNYAC Cross Country Championships hosted by the State University of New York at New Paltz at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y.
SUNY Plattsburgh placed second with 53 points, while SUNY Cortland, the defending conference champion, took third with 85 points. SUNY Oneonta (fourth, 88), New Paltz (fifth, 134), The College at Brockport (sixth, 191), SUNY Fredonia (seventh, 200), SUNY Oswego (eighth, 233), Buffalo State (ninth, 248) and SUNY Potsdam (10th, 318) filled out the remainder of the team standings.
On a day that featured a forecast of snow and temperatures hovering below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, the SUNYAC women fought through the elements to produce what wound up being another memorable conference meet.
Geneseo head coach Mike Woods was named the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year for the 10th time in his career, as the Blue Knights reclaimed the conference crown after a second-place finish at last year's championship meet.
Stefanie Braun of Plattsburgh was the individual champion, navigating the 6K course in 22:39.13. Alyson Dalton of Cortland followed closely behind at 22:49.46, while Alyssa Smith of Geneseo placed third (22:52.16). Danae Polsin of Geneseo (fourth, 22:53.68), Danielle Kennedy of Oneonta (fifth, 22:56.68), Ashley Jones of Geneseo (sixth, 23:03.39) and Bori Tozser of Cortland (seventh, 23:04.06) rounded out the First-Team All-SUNYAC honorees.
Second-Team All-SUNYAC acclaim went to
Nichole Wischoff of New Paltz (eighth, 23:09.84), Brigid Heenan of Geneseo (ninth, 23:13.13), Julia Warren of Plattsburgh (10th, 23:23.61), Brittany Trahan of Plattsburgh (11th, 23:24.09), Kelley Driscoll of Plattsburgh (12th, 23:34.52), Emily Cotey of Cortland (13th, 23:34.77), Alyssa Knott of Geneseo (14th, 23:34.98) and Pam Ernst of Oneonta (15th, 23:35.56).
Polsin, Kennedy and Heenan were all welcomed into the SUNYAC Women's Cross Country Hall of Fame as a result of their finishes.
First-Team All-SUNYAC honors go to those who place first through seventh at the SUNYAC Championships, while Second-Team All-SUNYAC honors go to those who place eighth through 15th. In order to be recognized in the SUNYAC Cross Country Hall of Fame, you must either finish in the top five at the conference championships once, finish in the top 10 at two different conference championships or finish in the top 15 at three different conference championships.
