Van Tyne helped the 13th-ranked Hawks to a 4-1 week, averaging 4.24 kills per set and hitting at a .417 clip (72 kills and 19 errors in 127 total attempts). Defensively, he averaged 0.76 digs per set and 0.53 blocks per set. He floored 14 kills, racked up a .500 hitting percentage and collected three block assists in a 3-0 win over Hunter College on Tuesday evening in the team's season opener. He then paced New Paltz in its first match at the Elmira Invitational on Saturday, as he landed a career-high 27 kills and achieved a .649 hitting percentage in a 3-2 win over Thiel College. Van Tyne helped New Paltz's cause in a 3-0 loss to fifth-ranked Juniata College in the team's second match on Saturday, offering 13 kills. On Sunday, he led a balanced attack in a pair of straight-set wins on the second day of the Elmira Invitational, as the Hawks defeated Elmira College, 3-0, before topping CCNY, 3-0. Van Tyne had 10 kills against the Soaring Eagles and eight kills against the Beavers. New Paltz (4-1) is idle for a week and a half before opening UVC play on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at Bard College.
