MISSION STATEMENT

Department of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation
 
"The Department of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation is rooted in the overall mission of the State University of New York at New Paltz. The mission of the New Paltz Department of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation within the Division of Student Affairs is to sponsor a broad-based athletic, wellness and recreation program that provides transformational, educational and athletic opportunities for students to grow, to develop and to support the mission of the College by complementing and enhancing its diversity and quality of life.
 
The department's programs strive for athletic excellence, competitive and recreational opportunities and overall wellness for the student body and college community. To fulfill this mission, the Department has developed principles of operation to provide guidance and direction to its personnel on behalf of the campus. This Mission Statement and accompanying principles require strong dedication and commitment from all who participate in, coach in, teach in and support the Department of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation."
 
Guiding Principles of New Paltz Athletics, Wellness and Recreation
 
1. The growth and development of student-athletes, student body and others within the campus community in all aspects of college life is of primary importance. The Department will initiate and maintain support programs that will focus on the total development of its students.
 
2. The Department will engage students who are committed to obtaining a degree from the institution, and it will provide the necessary resources and institute and maintain policies and procedures that will encourage the fullest development of the academic potential of all New Paltz students.
 
3. The College will support a strong, broad-based athletic, wellness and recreation program providing a wide range of competitive opportunities for students, faculty and staff.
 
4. The policies and direction of the Department will encourage good sportsmanship among student-athletes, coaching staff, students, administration, and the campus community.
 
5. The Department will employ staff that is committed to the integrity and excellence of the total program.
 
6. The Department will comply with federal, NCAA, SUNYAC, UVC, ECAC, NIRSA, NCEA and IHSA State and College regulations and will develop educational programs for its constituencies to enhance compliance with such regulations.
 
7. The Department will work with appropriate constituencies within the College to insure the proper balance of athletic, wellness, recreation and academic interests.
 
8. The Department will provide an intercollegiate athletics program that seeks excellence with the objective of competing for championships at the highest level.
 
9. The department will provide a wellness and recreation program that is comprehensive with the objective of diverse engagement.
