Masterson, a Canandaigua, N.Y., native, ushered in an era of rampant success for the New Paltz women's swimming team, and she became just the second Hawk swimmer to gain All-America recognition. During her tenure on the team, the Hawks went 20-6 in dual-meet competition, and she set two SUNYAC records (50 and 100 freestyle, both in 2006) and three SUNYAC meet records (50 freestyle [2006], 100 freestyle [2005] and 200 freestyle [2006]). The two-year captain and Canandaigua Academy graduate was twice named the SUNYAC Most Outstanding Female Swimmer—doing so in 2005 and 2006—and she made the All-SUNYAC First Team from 2004-06. Masterson was an eight-time SUNYAC champion, earning titles in the 50 freestyle (2005-06), the 100 freestyle (2004-06), the 200 freestyle (2005-06) and the 200 medley relay (2006). Following the 2006 SUNYAC Swimming & Diving Championships, she was accorded the Grace Mowatt Award, which is awarded annually to a female swimmer/diver for outstanding athletic and academic achievement in her collegiate career.

She twice made it to the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, doing so in 2005 and 2006. During the 2006 campaign, she earned two All-America citations, as she placed third in the 50 freestyle (24.10) and seventh in the 100 freestyle (52.84) at the 2006 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. To date, she is one of only four New Paltz women's swimmers to place among the top eight at the national meet. The Department of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation also bestowed departmental honors on her in 2005 and 2006, as she earned the Carol Eckman Award, which is given to New Paltz's most outstanding female athlete. Masterson earned her bachelor's degree in psychology from New Paltz in 2006.
