SUNY New Paltz Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader Against Oswego

Oswego, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz Softball team traveled to Oswego State to take on the Lakers for a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday.

Jillian Harrison pitched a gem for the Hawks (4-10 overall) in game one and came away with her first victory, helping her team to a 9-3 win. SUNY New Paltz's bats struggled to get going again late in game two and fell, 6-2 to split the series.

The first game went scoreless until the fifth when the Hawks gave Harrison a one run advantage. Madison Rappold got the inning started with a one-out single to right. Julia Mastrup came in to pinch run and was advanced to third two batters later on a single from Kiley Besko. Rhionna Bianchini got the job done, plating Mastrup on a ground out to push SUNY New Paltz ahead.

Harrison blanked the Lakers (6-10) again in the bottom half of the fifth, which led into a breakout sixth inning that allowed the Hawks to take the win.

Kelly Marmorowski led off with a single and advanced into scoring position on a throwing error. Tess Lambie came in to pinch run for Marmorowski and was brought home with an RBI single by Katie Quagliana. Carol Ann Campsey followed with a double down the left field line to score Quagliana. Rappold got her second hit of the day to put two runners on for SUNY New Paltz. Besko platted Campsey and Bianchini earned her second RBI of the day with a single to score Rappold and push her team's lead to 5-0.

Celia Santini and Marmorowski added two more runs to the Hawks' total with back-to-back RBI base hits, giving Harrison a 7-0 cushion to work with heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Coach Krysti Maronski talks to her team in between innings
Oswego gained back a run, but SUNY New Paltz answered in the seventh with two more. Quagliana led off the inning with a double and was later brought home by Bianchini who recorded her third hit and third RBI of the game. A passed ball scored Campsey who got on base on a walk after Quagliana's at-bat. The Hawks allowed two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but still hung on for the win.

Seven players registered a hit for SUNY New Paltz in game one, including a multi-hit game from Besko, Bianchini, Marmorowski, Quagliana and Rappold. Bianchini was nearly perfect at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored.

"Rhionna had a great day at the plate today and really had some quality at-bats," said Hawks coach Krysti Maronski. "She is progressing really nicely and still has so much more growth to happen."

Harrison went five innings, allowed just six hits, one earned run, two walks with seven strikeouts.

"Jill had another really great outing on the mound today," Maronski said. "It's nice to see her gaining experience and coming into her own."

Quagliana earned the start in game two. She pitched 5.1 innings, allowed six hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts. Oswego took a 1-0 lead in the second, but there were zeros across the board for both teams until the sixth.

SUNY New Paltz tied the game in the top of the inning with a solo home run by Marmorowski, her first of her collegiate career. The stalemate didn't last long, however, as the Lakers opened up the game in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to take a 6-1 lead into the seventh.

The Hawks got a run back in the seventh, as Quagliana knocked a two-out double. Bianchini capped off a productive day at the plate with an RBI double to bring home Quagliana and cut the deficit to four, but Marmorowski struck out for the final out of the inning.

"The second game was a good one until the sixth when they had a breakout inning," Maronski said. "At the plate we were just off with our timing and when we finally started to make adjustments they made a smart pitching change."

Bianchini, Marmorowski and Quagliana led the way offensively for SUNY New Paltz. Bianchini went 4-for-9 with four RBI and a run scored on the day, while Marmorowski went 3-for-8 with a run and two RBI. Quagliana hit 4-for-6 with two runs and RBI and two walks in the two games combined.

"Overall I'm happy with how we have competed our last few days out and we have shown much improvement in a lot of areas," Maronski said. "We are getting some really good production from some new faces and it was awesome to see Kelly hit her first collegiate home run."

The Hawks are back home for short rest Wednesday, hosting SUNY Plattsburgh for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Mary Gray Deane Field.
