Clermont, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz played St. Lawrence University, North Central and Augsburg Saturday and Sunday at the PFX Spring Games, going 1-2 in the three-game slate over the weekend.
After a storm that came through Saturday morning canceled the Hawks' originally scheduled games against Dominican (Ill) and University-Wisconsin River Falls, SUNY New Paltz instead faced St. Lawrence University Saturday night, falling 8-3. It then took on North Central in a stout pitching duel with the Cardinals taking the edge, 2-1 before the Hawks bounced back to five-run Augsburg, 11-3.
Against the Saints, SUNY New Paltz took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after
Jackie Rometo moved
Rhionna Bianchini to third with a double. Katie Qugaliana plated Bianchini a batter later on a sacrifice fly out. Rometo doubled the advantage after an error on a hit by
Sydney Bonewit allowed Rometo to score.
The lead didn't last long however, as St. Lawrence countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning after a three-run homerun swing. The Saints added a run in the second and two in the fifth, as they took a 6-2 lead into the bottom half of the inning. The Hawks earned back a run in the sixth after a double by
Mya DiRenzo scored
Madison Maggs, but the offense stopped there as St. Lawrence added two more runs in the bottom of the inning to aid in the 8-3 SUNY New Paltz defeat.
The Hawks faced North Central's Gianna Corban in the circle who allowed just five hits, while striking out 11 in a full seven innings.
Lindsay Roman earned the start against the Cardinals and had herself a productive outing as well, pitching a complete game while giving up just four hits and recording four strikeouts.
North Central scored runs in the second and third before SUNY New Paltz cut into the lead in the fourth with Bonewit registering the RBI.
Quagliana earned the win against the Auggies, pitching all five innings, allowing just three hits, one earned run and three walks with four strikeouts.
Augsburg took the early one run lead after the first, but a six-run second inning broke the game open with
Jillian Shelbourne smacking an RBI double in the fifth to close out the game. Shelbourne led the way going 2-for-3, one run scored and two RBI. Bianchini had an RBI, a run scored and three walks, while Maggs and
Kelly Marmorowski each had an RBI and a run scored, while Quagliana finished with an RBI and two runs scored.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Tuesday, playing a 10 a.m. game against Rhodes before facing Utica College at 12:15 both at Hancock Park in Clermont, Fl.
