NEW PALTZ, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team, holding first place in the SUNYAC heading into today's matchup with William Paterson University, continued their spectacular play on Wednesday, defeating the visiting Pioneers by a score of 9-0. With the victory, the Hawks improved to 11-3 overall, while William Paterson lost their fifth-consecutive match and dropped to 1-7.
SUNY New Paltz conceded two combined points in three doubles matches, while giving up only one in six singles matches. On the doubles side,
Trinity Chow and
Tatiana Barnett, the reigning Peter J. Cahill Most Valuable Player and reigning SUNYAC Rookie of the Year, dominated William Paterson's Jordan Sweet and Emily Murphy 8-0.
Onalee Batcheller and Allie Dratch scored an 8-1 win over Kayla Miller and Erica Hickey, and
Isabel van der Veen and
Loretta Donovan took care of Abby Viola and Alicia Mitchell 8-1. The 8-0 win for Chow and Barnett was a welcomed triumph after the pair slipped up in their last matchup, a 10-8 loss against SUNY Brockport. The two are off to a tremendous start to their doubles' season, having won four of five matchups.
On the single's side, Anya Bartek, Batcheller, van der Veen, Barnett and
Alex Chimenti all won their contests without trouble in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Donovan's 6-1, 6-0 win over Abby Viola represented the only singles match where a point was given up.
"A very convincing all round play in both doubles and singles matches," said Hawks' head coach
Rob Bruley of his squad's performance.
SUNY New Paltz now takes their top-ranked squad into a weekend matchup with SUNY Oneonta on Senior Day, against a Red Dragon team that is 15-5 with a matching 6-0 conference record.
"Two days of practice should put us in the correct frame of mind for Saturday's showdown matchup with Oneonta," Bruley said.
