SUNY New Paltz Softball Bounces Back with Dominant Doubleheader Sweep of Potsdam

POTSDAM, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team rebounded in a major way Sunday afternoon in Potsdam, dominating the Bears 18-2 and 11-0 in five, and- six-inning victories, respectively.

In game one, Katie Quagliana went 3-for-5 with four RBI and Carol Ann Campsey hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to make the count 12-0. Two more runs were added in the top of the fourth and four additional runs were scored in the fifth inning. Sydney Waldon retired batters in order in the bottom of the fifth to secure the game one win. The second half of the doubleheader saw the road team dominate once again, winning 11-0, with Jackie Rometo keying the offensive attack, going 4-for-5 with five RBI.

"We did a good job of taking it to them today and swung the bat very well overall," said Hawks coach Krysti Maronski.

The opening game was a complete 180 from what the Hawks produced against Plattsburgh State, as they jumped on their opposition right away. Rometo walked to begin the game, and Quagliana promptly singled into center field, advancing Rometo to third. Jessica Graepel, batting third, doubled, bringing both runners home and giving SUNY New Paltz a 2-0 lead with no outs. Consecutive singles from Jillian Shelbourne and Campsey kept the Hawks momentum going, and both advanced on a wild pitch. Nicole Greco singled to bring Shelbourne home, and Madison Maggs grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Campsey. A triple from Sydney Bonewit in the very next at-bat into right center field brought Maggs home, making the score 5-0. Rhionna Bianchini was hit by a pitch, but Rometo grounded out to mercifully end the first.

After Lindsay Roman, who has been great on the mound all season long, got Anna Grottola and Vanessa Brandt to pop up and Danielle Mascarello to ground out, SUNY New Paltz added to its lead in the second. After Quagliana singled into center, Shelbourne, with one out, doubled into right center field, bringing Quagliana around to score, giving the Hawks a 6-0 lead. Greco hit a sharp ball to second base that deflected off Brandt, allowing another run to score and pushing the lead to 7-0 after one and a half innings.
Rhionna Bianchini

Roman continued to impress on the mound in the second inning, getting Giavanna Marco and Patience Riley both to pop up after a double from Kelsey Bennett put her on base and Anna Brown reached on an error. The consecutive outs from Roman were vital, coming with Brown and Bennett on first and third with one out, and ending any threat that the Bears had to score in the inning.

SUNY New Paltz really broke the game open in the third, with Bonewit leading off the inning with a single into right field. After she stole second base, she was brought home by Bianchini, who hit a double. Rometo then singled to bring Bianchini to third, and Quagliana hit an RBI double. With the score 10-0, Graepel popped up to third base, but Shelbourne hit a base hit up the middle. Campsey's aforementioned blast over the left field fence really blew the game open, giving the Hawks a 12-0 lead.

The home team got a little momentum going in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs, but SUNY New Paltz added on in the fourth to re-up the advantage.

Maggs hit a sharp ball to short and beat the throw to first base. With Bonewit up, a passed ball brought Maggs to second. Bonewit took the next pitch to left field, advancing Maggs to third and putting runners on the corners with nobody out. Sierra Ashley hit Bianchini with a pitch, bringing Bonewit to second base. A Rometo sacrifice fly ensued, as did a Quagliana fielder's choice. Maggs and Bonewit both scored on the plays, giving SUNY New Paltz a 14-2 lead.

After the Bears were retired one, two, three in the bottom of the fourth, the Hawks added four more runs in the top half of the fifth inning, with all the damage being done with two outs.

Waldon was spectacular on the mound, striking out six in just two innings of work. Roman picked up the victory, giving up four hits and two earned runs over three innings.

In game two, SUNY New Paltz dominated once again, utilizing a five run sixth inning to blow the game open. The Hawks outhit SUNY Potsdam 13-4 in the game and were led by leadoff hitter Rometo's outstanding five RBI game.

SUNY New Paltz was held scoreless in the first inning but got its bats going in the top half of the second. Rometo hit a two-out two RBI single into the outfield, which brought home Maggs and Greco who got on with a fielder's choice and walk, respectively earlier in the inning. Quagliana, who was 2-for-5 with two RBI in the game, hit an RBI single to bring the lead to 3-0.

The Hawks added on in the third, doing damage with two outs. Greco hit a triple down the right field line, which was followed by a double from Maggs, bringing the count to 4-0 in favor of SUNY New Paltz. Maggs was later brought home to push the advantage to 5-0.

After adding a run in the third, the Hawks closed out the game in six after scoring six runs in the top of the inning to create an 11-run difference that they held onto in the bottom half to claim the win and series sweep.

"We have to continue to take steps forward from here on out and make sure our effort and focus is 100 percent there in every inning," Maronski said.

With the Sunday victories, SUNY New Paltz improved to 13-9. Rometo's 6-for-8, six RBI day led the offensive attack, while Quagliana was not far behind, going 5-for-10 with six RBI as well. The Hawks quartet of pitchers Quagliana, Roman, Waldon, and Harrison struck out nine batters collectively.

Next up for SUNY New Paltz is a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday on the road at Mount Saint Mary starting at 3 p.m.
