Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) announced its weekly award winners Tuesday with junior guard/forward
Brianna Fitzgerald selected to her first career SUNYAC weekly honor.
Fitzgerald becomes the first recipient for the Hawks this winter and the first for the team since
Maddie Gillis earned the weekly accolade last season.
The Dix Hills, NY native has led SUNY New Paltz all season and on Friday in its last game of 2022 was no different. Fitzgerald paced her team in points (16), steals (4), blocks (3), assists (4) and rebounds (9) with all except the latter totaling game-highs as well. She shot 7-for-16 from the field in 37 minutes and was just a rebound shy of registering her third double-double of the season in the 50-37 road win. Fitzgerald helped stymy a Dutchmen comeback late in the matchup answering with a basket in the paint, driving through two defenders, then on the ensuing defensive possession, stepped in for a charge to create the turnover and help maintain the double-digit lead for the Hawks in the final minute.
Fitzgerald currently leads her team with 13.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, along with her team-best 35 assists, 29 steals and seven blocks while shooting nearly 47 percent from the floor.
Fitzgerald and SUNY New Paltz are back on the court Saturday, hosting SUNY Oneonta at 2 p.m. in the Hawk Center.
