SUNY New Paltz Baseball Loses Road Doubleheader to Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz lost both games of its doubleheader at Plattsburgh Saturday, 4-3 and 10-7, respectively.

Xavier Zykoff earned the start for the Hawks on the mound for game one. He pitched through 3.2 innings, allowing six hits and no earned runs with one strikeout, but James McGovern was given the loss as he pitched two innings, yielding a hit and a walk with one earned run that broke the stalemate in the bottom of the seventh.

The Cardinals took the lead with a run in the third with the Hawks tying the game in the next top half with Justin Harvey reaching home on a fielder's choice by Justin Ortiz. After Plattsburgh scored a run in the fifth, SUNY New Paltz answered again in the next inning, as Matt Sarni was plated on a Mike Ascanio groundout.

A lead-off walk allowed the eventual go-ahead run on for the Cardinals in the bottom of the eighth. Robert Gregory earned two outs before Liam Ryan took over on the mound and gave up an RBI base hit, which pushed Plattsburgh to a 4-2 lead.

SUNY New Paltz rallied in the ninth, as Nick Harvey led off with a single to center. Christopher Sais followed with a base hit before a sacrifice bunt by Michael Boccarossa moved both runners over into scoring position. Justin Harvey brought Nick Harvey home on a sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to one. Fabian Apicella walked in the following at-bat, but the Hawks comeback ended on a fielder's choice to solidify the 4-3 outcome.

SUNY New Paltz went up 3-2 in game two with a three-run second inning, thanks to a two RBI double by Apicella and an RBI single by Sarni. The Cardinals answered with two in the bottom half before taking a 7-3 lead into the fifth. Sais ripped a two-out RBI single in the top of the inning, which scored Ascanio to cut the difference, 6-4, but Plattsburgh answered with a run in the bottom of the frame to re-up the three-run lead. The Cardinals added three more in the eighth to go up, 10-4 heading into the ninth where the Hawks worked back to get within three, but a flyout ended the game.
