New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz swept its series against SUNY Brockport Saturday at Mary Gray Deane Field, 6-0 and 8-0, respectively led by a historic performance by ace
Lindsay Roman who recorded the first perfect game for the Hawks in at least 30 years.
Roman sat down 21 straight batters through seven innings of work with no hits or walks to record the first perfect game in program history in recent memory, leading the way to a 6-0 win in game one.
SUNY New Paltz gave Roman run support early, as
Rhionna Bianchini led off with a walk and reached home after consecutive steals and then an errant throw to bump the opening lead to 1-0. The Hawks added two more in the second, as an RBI double by Bianchini plated
Juliet Bernstein with
Jackie Rometo following up with an RBI double in the next at-bat to score Laurne Serrao.
Serrao led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk before Bianchini, Rometo and Shelbourne led off with back-to-back-to-back singles, which allowed Serrao to score and pushed the advantage to 5-0.
Sydney Bonewit capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to plate Rometo and boosted the lead to 6-0 heading into the fifth. Roman then retired the next nine batters quickly with the final on a flyout to left to solidify history for the Hawks.
