SUNY New Paltz Softball Sweep Fredonia, Secure First Ever First Seed in SUNYAC Tournament

Hawks Set Program Win Record in Road Sweep of Blue Devils

Fredonia, NY — History was made official Saturday for the State University of New York at New Paltz. For the first time in program history, the Hawks are hosting the SUNYAC Tournament claiming the No. 1 seed after finishing the regular season with two more SUNYAC wins to improve to a league best, 16-2.

SUNY New Paltz rolled to a pair of victories on the road over hosting Fredonia, 5-2 and 12-3, respectively and not only secured the top spot in the conference tournament but did so by eclipsing the most wins in program history, which the team set last season at 27 games, improving to 29-11 overall with still games to go in the postseason.

Hawks ace Lindsay Roman threw another gem, pitching a seven-inning complete game win to improve to 16-2 on the season, yielding just four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts. SUNY New Paltz gave Roman a 2-0 lead in the second following a sacrifice fly from Kelly Marmorowski to bring lead-off hitter Sydney Bonewit home after she was walked to start the inning. Emmie Mae Cabrera then laid down an RBI bunt single to plate Juliet Bernstein from third.

The Blue Devils tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hawks picked Roman up with two runs to begin the fifth. Back-to-back bunt singles got the inning started with Jillian Shelbourne bringing in a run on a sacrifice pop fly. Bonewit then doubled to score another run and push the score to 4-2. Shelbourne helped her team to an insurance run in the seventh, rocketing a one-out double. Nicole Greco pinch-ran and was later brought home on another double, this time by Bernstein to bring the score to 5-2. Roman closed out the final inning, allowing just a base runner to take the win.

Cabrera hit 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Bernstein finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Bianchini finished 2-for-4 with a run and Bonewit added a hit, a run scored and an RBI.

Jillian Harrison pitched the final three frames and gave up five hits and one earned run with no walks and two strikeouts.

The Blue Devils took the initial lead with a run in the bottom of the first, but the Hawks quickly got up 2-0 in the next top half. They broke the game open in the fifth, scoring four runs to go up 7-1.

Shelbourne started the inning with a base hit with Greco pinch running, she was moved over on a sacrifice bunt before Bernstein brought her home on an RBI single. Jaycee Filancia earned a base on a single and Catie Driscoll then brought her and Bernstein home on a two-RBI double. Isabella Shepherd recorded an RBI single to plate Driscoll to round out the inning.

Filancia added two more runs in the sixth on a two-RBI double with SUNY New Paltz putting a stamp on the win after scoring three more in the seventh.

Bonewit, Bernstein and Filancia each had big games at the plate. Bonewit finished 3-for-4 with a run, two RBI and a stolen base, while Bernstein went 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Filancia finished 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI and a walk.

SUNY New Paltz's pursuit of the program's first ever SUNYAC title will begin Thursday on Mary Gray Deane Field with the Hawks matched up in game one against Oneonta at 10 a.m.
