Sparkill, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team was on the road today for their first match since last week. The Hawks were in action today against division two St. Thomas Aquinas from the East Coast Conference. The Hawks fell to the Spartans 0-4 in a series called due to rain.
"In a rain affected match New Paltz was 0-4 down when the match had to be suspended due to rain. Playing against a very strong Div II program we handled the pace of the ball very well with a dominant volley display by Loretta Donovan at #1 doubles. Scoring Div II rules New Paltz lost the doubles 1-2, the 3 doubles matches only count for 1pt in Div II tennis. Our #3 doubles team of Tatiana Barnett & Nina Genzone won their 3rd doubles match when a St Thomas Aquinas player injured her knee in 3rd game and had to retire.
In singles against a very strong Aquinas line up the standout match was at #1 singles where Justine Stanejko split sets with her opponent only to have the match interrupted by rain in a 3rd set tie breaker. Both Loretta Donovan and Olivia Kunz had their matches suspended, both in the second set due to rain. Playing this type of opponent will only make us stronger for future matches including conference championships," said Coach Rob Bruley.
The Hawks will return this Friday on April 19, when they play host to Vassar College, at 6:00 PM on the North Tennis Courts in New Paltz, NY. The Hawks will play two more matches this weekend against Hartwick College on Saturday and Rochester Institute of Technology on Sunday.
