SUNY New Paltz Baseball Earns Series Win Over Brockport

Gregory tosses no-hitter through seven innings pitched to help Hawks to 10-1 game two win

Brockport, NY— The State University of New York continued its three game SUNYAC series Saturday, with a doubleheader against Brockport on Clark V. Whited Field and earned its first series win over the Golden Eagles since 2018.

The Hawks (18-10 overall) looked to make it five in a row after taking the first game of the series Friday. Brockport wanted to put an end to the winning streak, and picked up the win in Game 1,  5-1. SUNY New Paltz dusted itself off with fantastic pitching, backed by a seven-inning no-hit bid by sophomore Robert Gregory while coupled by superb hitting by the Hawks, leading to a 10-1 Game 2 win.

Right-hander James McGovern was on the hill in Game 1 looking for his third win of the season. For the first three innings, McGovern was dealing, and kept the Eagles hitless. In the bottom of the fourth, Brockport grounded out to Tommy Kreider and struck out swinging, handing the Hawks the first two outs of the inning. With one out away from four hitless innings, the Eagles kept the inning alive, and roped a double. The next batter lined an RBI single to give Brockport a 1-0 lead. McGovern surrendered two more singles in the inning, the latter plated two more runs as SUNY Paltz faced a 3-0 deficit.

Anthony Pericolosi looked to get the Hawks on the board in the top of the fifth when he lined a leadoff single. With Pericolosi at first, Michael Boccarossa stepped up and cracked a double moving the runner 90 feet away. Dillon Ristano made sure the run scored and got one in the air to right field. Pericolosi came in to score the only run of the game for SUNY New Paltz, cutting the deficit to 3-1 on the SAC fly.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Eagles added on to their lead with a SAC fly of their own. McGovern escaped the inning with just one run scored.

In the bottom of the eighth, McGovern retired the first two batters on a flyout to Nick Harvey and a groundout to Boccarossa. Just like the fourth inning, Brockport did not want to go down easy, and extended the inning with a single. The runner then showed his wheels and stole second. With a runner in scoring position, the Golden Eagles drove in their fifth, and final run of the game on a two-out double.
Michael Boccarossa celebrates after a seventh inning three-run home run

Frankie Collora took over in his sixth appearance of the year in the eighth after Brockport extended the inning on a base on balls. The two-out walk did not hurt SUNY New Paltz as Collora induced a pop fly to right to end the inning.

Michael Ascanio kept the ninth inning alive with a two out walk. The walk would not amount to a comeback as SUNY New Paltz dropped Game 1, 5-1.

McGovern was handed his fourth loss of the season after going seven and two thirds innings giving up 10 hits, five runs, all of which were earned, one walk with one strikeout.

Pericolosi went 2-for-4 with the lone run scored. Boccarossa went 1-for-2 with a walk. Ristano went 0-for-2 with the lone RBI. Justin Harvey went 1-for-3. Fabian Apicella went 2-for-3.

Gregory then took the mound in Game 2 and turned in his best pitching performance of his young career.

In the bottom of the first, Gregory retired the first two batters on two flyouts to Pericolosi. The next batter for the Golden Eagles extended the inning with a walk. The walk would not amount to anything as the final out of the inning came on a flyout to Nick Harvey.

With two outs and nobody on in the top of the third. Nick Harvey stepped up and slugged a two-run home run for his second of the year, giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Looking to add on in the top of the fifth, Apicella led off with a walk. Showing off his speed, Apicella headed for second and reached safely. A passed ball to Nick Harvey moved Apicella 90 feet away from home. The passed ball paid off as Ristano lofted one to center. Apicella came in to score on the SAC fly, making it 2-0 SUNY New Paltz.

After a hitless first game, Kreider rebounded with a two-out double. With a runner in scoring position, Brockport went to its bullpen. Ascanio was the first one to greet the new arm and hit a ground ball to short. The throw went home and was thrown away, allowing Kreider to score and creating a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth, Justin Harvey reached on a hit by pitch. Apicella stepped up and moved Harvey into scoring position. With two on, Wallace Kirkpatrick lined a double to plate Harvey making it a 4-0 lead. The Hawks picked up another run when the Golden Eagles balked in Apicella.

After going seven hitless innings, Gregory stayed on for the eighth looking to cement his name in history. Brockport led off and reached first on an error by Boccarossa. Brockport then used a pinch hitter, and was successful as a walk put two runners on. The batter was the last Gregory faced as he left with the no-hitter intact. Right hander Jason Wall took over for his eighth appearance of the season. In a relief role, Wall looked to try and secure the combined no-hitter. The Golden Eagles turned to its bench and it paid off, as it notched its first hit of the afternoon, breaking the no-hitter and loading the bases as well. With bases loaded and no outs, Wall dialed in and retired the side on two flyouts to Nick Harvey and Ascanio, escaping trouble and preserving the shutout.

The Hawks plated five more in the top of the ninth, highlighted by four extra base hits. One of which was an RBI triple by Justin Harvey that drove in Ristano with the eighth run of the game. Nick Harvey put the icing on the cake with an RBI double plating Apicella, and making it a 10-0 lead.

Wall stayed on for the bottom of the ninth looking to complete the one-hit shutout. Brockport had other ideas, and reached on a one-out walk. Later in the inning, Wall surrendered two more walks to load the bases. The next batter grounded into a fielder's choice hit to Kreider. The run scored to break-up the shutout and cut the lead to nine. Wall buckled down and secured the final out of the game on a ball hit to Kreider giving SUNY New Paltz the 10-1 lead and the doubleheader sweep.

Gregory earned his fourth win of the season after going seven no-hit innings giving up no hits, no runs, five walks with three strikeouts.

Nick Harvey went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI. Kreider went 3-for-6 with a run scored. Bocarossa went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Ristano went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Justin Harvey went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Apicella went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

The Hawks return home Tuesday taking on the University of Mount Saint Vincent. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
