Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz used two stout pitching performances from its top two arms in
Lindsay Roman and
Sydney Waldon to earn its fourth-straight SUNYAC sweep, earning 2-0 and 7-2 wins over hosting Plattsburgh.
SUNY New Paltz (22-4 overall, 8-0 SUNYAC) gave Roman an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a two-RBI single up the middle by
Rhionna Bianchini who platted
Maddie Anderson and
Jaycee Filancia.
Roman did the rest, as the senior allowed just four hits with no walks the rest of the way. The most dangerous threat by the Cardinals came in the final inning, as Plattsburgh led off with a double to right. Roman anchored down and stranded the runner for the shutout, as she earned three straight outs on a pop-up, strikeout swinging and then a foul out to Filancia at third to claim her 10th win of the season to improve to 10-3 overall and notch her fourth complete game shutout of the year after totaling four strikeouts.
Offensively, SUNY New Paltz totaled three hits in the pitcher's duel. Filancia led the way with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.
Jillian Shelbourne tallied a hit with Bianchini capping the offense with her two RBI base hit while adding a walk and a stolen base.
Sydney Waldon took over in the circle for the Hawks in game two and she pitched five solid innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, two walks with five strikeouts to earn the win and improve her record to 11-1 on the season.
The game was tight until the fifth inning as SUNY New Paltz entered the frame with a slight, 2-1 advantage. An error started the offensive output for the Hawks in the inning, allowing
Lauren Serrao to reach with one out. Shelbourne then stepped into the batter's box a batter later and with two outs all but sealed the win as she blasted a three-run shot over the right field fence for her third home run of the season and cushioning her team's lead to 5-1.
Alyssa Zangrilli took over for Waldon in the bottom of the sixth and closed out with six outs in seven batters faced. SUNY New Paltz added two more insurance runs in the seventh following two more RBI for Shelbourne on a base hit through the right side to score Filancia and Serrao from third and second, respectively.
Shelbourne was the catalyst in game two. She finished 3-for-4 with a run and a career-high six RBI. Filancia followed, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a double. Bianchini finished with two hits on the day, while Serrao had two runs scored.
Zangrilli picked up her third save of the year after pitching a near perfect two innings, giving up just a walk with one strikeout.
