SUNY New Paltz Softball Defeats Brockport in Doubleheader Sweep

Hawks secure two final regular season wins heading into SUNYAC tournament

Brockport, NY — For the final game of the regular season, the State University of New York at New Paltz swept the Brockport Golden Eagles in an on-the-road doubleheader. The Hawks cruise into the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC, along with having tying the most wins in program history and finishing with its best regular season SUNYAC record at 17-1.

The Hawks (31-5 overall, 17-1 conference) routed the Golden Eagles (8-28, 2-16) on the home team's senior day. The two wins conclude the Hawks' historic 2024 regular season campaign, tying with last year's overall win count (31), while already having surpassed last year's regular season win count (29). Regardless of the outcome against Brockport, SUNY New Paltz had already secured the No. 1 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament after a doubleheader split against Geneseo Friday.

The Hawks' first hit of Game 1 came in the top of the third after Jillian Shelbourne singled to right field. Kelsey O'Brien followed with a double to send Shelbourne to third, but the Hawks could not send anyone home before the close of the inning.

The matchup was scoreless on both ends until the fifth inning. Jackie Rometo hit out to center field, which placed her on first. Brockport tagged Rometo out on a single from Shelbourne, leaving Shelbourne on first with freshman Kate Hope replacing Shelbourne as a pinch runner. O'Brien walked in the next at-bat, which advanced Hope into scoring position. Soon after, Kelly Marmorowski knocked a double out to left field for an RBI, scoring Hope and advancing O'Brien to third, giving the Hawks the initial, 1-0 lead.

The top of the seventh brought the next offensive threat for SUNY New Paltz. After two outs, O'Brien was walked before she quickly stole second. After a passed ball by the Golden Eagles, O'Brien headed to third. Marmorowski then singled to left field for her second RBI, which let O'Brien run home for a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Brockport attempted to rally late in the seventh and put one run on the board off an RBI, but its effort was lost after two consecutive line outs. The Hawks took game one 2-1 with Lindsay Roman having pitched all seven innings of the first contest. The senior struck out seven batters and only allowed four hits.

SUNY New Paltz started Game 2 strong and put three runners on base, two of which came free on hit-by-pitches. With one out, Brockport went to the bullpen and was able get out of the inning and end the Hawks scoring threat.

On the second at-bat of the third, Rometo grounded toward shortstop to get herself on first before advancing to second on a steal. Rometo had another opportunity to advance, and headed to third after a passed ball. Shelbourne secured her first RBI of the day on a fly out to right field, which allowed Rometo to score the game's first run and put the Hawks up 1-0 early in the competition.

Rometo was successful at bat once again in the top of the fifth, as she drove a single to center field and ran around the horn to steal second base. Under the pressure of two outs, Shelbourne came up clutch and drilled a ball to right field for an RBI, which brought Rometo home yet again to put SUNY New Paltz up 2-0. Brockport was unable to score for the entirety of Game 2, as Hawks' Sydney Waldon limited the Golden Eagles to just three hits in a full seven innings pitched, while striking out six in the complete game shutout to improve her record to 15-1 on the season.

SUNY New Paltz finished its regular season atop the SUNYAC for the second straight year, while being slotted third in the lasted NCAA Division III Region III rankings. The Hawks begin SUNYAC tournament play Thursday, hosting the contest for the second year in a row in the double eilimination tournament.
