SUNY New Paltz Women's Tennis Union Tournament Day Two Recap

Schenectady, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz concluded day two of the Union Invitational Sunday.

Competing against the hosting Garnett Chargers, St. Lawrence University and SUNY Oneonta, the Hawks competed in both singles and doubles action Saturday and Sunday.

"A very competitive last day in both doubles and singles," said SUNY New Paltz coach Rob Bruley. "This past weekend has prepared us nicely for our home oepner on Friday. Everyone from top to bottom played well this weekend and we are excited to continue this momentum into the dual match season."

Isabel van der Veen and Justine Stanejko played St. Lawrence's doubles team in "A" Doubles, but fell 8-4, while Amirah Alston and Olivia Kunz faced Union's doubles pair in the "B" Final and advanced into the championship round after winning a tight match, 8-7 tie-breaker. They ultimately fell in the finals against St. Lawerence, 8-2.

Freshman Sydney Sladicka earned a spot in the fifth place "A" singles final against Union, but lost in straight sets, 8-0. Van der Veen, after winning 8-0 Saturday, faced Union in the fifth place "B" singles and took an 8-4 defeat in the championship match.

Olivia Eifert competed in a singles exhibition match Sunday as well for SUNY New Paltz, and the sophomore played a tough as she rolled to an 8-0 victory over Oneonta's Kyra Murray.

SUNY New Paltz resumes action Friday for its first dual-match of the season, taking on visiting Manhattanville on North Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m.
