SUNY New Paltz Baseball Beats Purchase 15-8

Purchase, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz Baseball program beat Purchase College 15-8 Wednesday afternoon on the road. New Paltz improves to an overall record of 8-6.
 
Connor Catania started on the mound for SUNY New Paltz pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one hit two runs and two walks. Carson McCaffrey pitched 1.0 inning, earning his first collegiate win. McCaffrey allowed just one hit, one run and three walks across the seven batters faced. 
 
Anthony Pericolosi reached first on an error by the right fielder and advanced to third. Tommy Kreider was hit by a pitch and advanced to first. Dillon Ristano singled up the middle, batting in Pericolosi for the first run of the game. Wallace Kirkpatrick singled up the right field line batting in Kreider for the Hawks second run. 
 
Kreider doubled down the right foul line landing on base in the top of the third inning. Apicella singled up the middle and advanced to second on a throw and then third on an error by the center fielder. This sent Kreider across home plate for the Hawks third run of the game. Joe Richetti flied out to left field on a sacrifice fly, to bring home Apicella for the fourth run of the game.
 
Garrett Grathwohl led off in the top of the fourth with a walk. Ryan Muskopf reached first on a fielder's choice and Grathwohl advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Pericolosi tripled down the right field line, batting in both Grathwohl and Muskopf, unearned. Kreider reached first on a fielder's choice that tagged Pericolosi out at home. He stole second and Ristano walked. Apicella singled to center field, batting Kreider in for the seventh run of the game. The Hawks lead the Panthers 7-2 heading into the fourth.
 
Dylan Thomasson came in to pitch for McCaffrey in the bottom of the fourth, pitching 2.1 innings. Thomasson allowed three walks, one hit and three runs among the 10 batters faced.
 
New Paltz scored three more runs in the top of the fifth. Kirkpatrick doubled to right center and Grathwohl doubled down the right field line. Kirkpatrick scored on the double, adding another run to the board. Sarni then doubled to right field and Grathwohl scored. Sarni advanced to third on a wild pitch and Pericolosi brought him home with a single. The Hawks led 10-3 heading into the sixth.
 
Apicella led off the sixth inning with a single up the middle. Richetti grounded into a double play that cleared the bases, but did not shake the Hawks offense. Kirkpatrick singled up the middle of the field. Grathwohl doubled to right field, once again letting Kirkpatrick score. Muskopf and Sarni were walked, loading the bases. Pericolosi singled to right field, batting in Grathwohl and Muskopf for runs 12 and 13.
 
Scott Scheppy headed out to the mound to relieve Thomasson in the bottom of the sixth inning. Scheppy pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run. 
 
Apicella led the top of the seventh off with a walk. Richetti followed that up with a single and Apicella advanced to second. Kirkpatrick grounded out and both men advanced a base. Grathwohl flied out to left field in a sacrifice fly bringing Apicella home for the Hawks 14th run of the ballgame.
 
Danny DiEdwards came in to pitch for New Paltz in the bottom of the eighth pitching 1.0 innings. DiEdwards allowed just two hits, one run and struck out one batter. The Hawks went into the top of the ninth leading 14-8.
 
New Paltz scored the final run of the game in the top of the ninth. Apicella reached first on an error by the center fielder and advanced to third. Richetti flied out to left field in a sacrifice fly batting in Apicella.
 
Dalton Rutt pitched the final inning on the mound, allowing no runs, no hits, no walks and no errors across the three batters faced.
 
The Hawks head home to host SUNYAC opponent SUNY Canton in their home opener Friday at 3.p.m.
