Clermont, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz lost both games Wednesday morning on day four of competition at the PFX Spring Games, falling to Babson College, 7-6 and Springfield College, 14-0.
Sydney Waldon earned the start and pitched a full six innings, allowing eight hits and six runs with seven walks and four strikeouts on 33 batters faced.
Alyssa Zangrilli pitched the final 1.1 innnings of the game letting up one run, one walk and striking out one batter. Zangrilli took the loss, dropping her record to 1- 1 on the season.
SUNY New Paltz got the ball rolling with the first run on the board in the first inning.
Kelsey O'Brien tripled to right center.
Ella Sharrock singled to right field batting O'Brien in but was left on base.
Maddie Anderson led off the top of the second with a walk.
Sophia D'Arcangelis singled through the left side, but both women were left on base.
O'Brien led off in the top of the third with a single to right field and then stole second.
Emmie Mae Cabrera grounded out to the pitcher and O'Brien advanced to third. Sharrock hit a home run to right center batting in O'Brien for runs number two and three.
Babson got a handle on the Hawks defense, evening up the score 3-3 after the bottom of the third.
The New Paltz offense battled back in the top of the fourth.
Lauren Parete earned a walk and
Kate Hope came in to pinch run. Hope stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball.
Lauren Serrao walked and then stole second. O'Brien singled up the middle batting in both Hope and Serrao to extend the Hawks lead, 5-3.
Sharrock led off the top of the fifth by making it to first on a throwing error by the second basemen and advancing to second. Sharrock then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Mallory Rohon singled up the middle batting in Sharrock for New Paltz final run of the game.
Babson battled back, earning three runs in the bottom of the seventh tying up the score at 6-6. New Paltz failed to gain the insurance run needed in the top of the eighth inning and Babson scored one more run in the bottom of the eighth, taking the game.
SUNY New Paltz struggled to muster scoring chances in their second game Wednesday morning against Springfield College, totaling six hits in the game and zero runs.
Leah Gunsett started on the mound for the Hawks. Gunsett allowed nine hits, nine runs, three walks and one strike out in her 1.2 innings on the mound. Gunsett took the loss for the game and drops to 0-4 overall on the season.
Morgan Smith pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits, three runs, two walks and one strike out amongst the eight batters faced.
Alyssa Zangrilli finished the game on the mound for the Hawks pitching 2.0 innings, allowing three runs, two hits and one walk.
Springfield's defense kept the Hawks at bay making it hard for anything more than a double to get through. Sharrock singled in the bottom of the first inning but was left on base. Rohon led off the second with a double to left field and made it to third when Anderson grounded out to the second basemen.
Jackie Rometo earned a single in the bottom of the third that pushed Serrao to third. O'Brien singled to third, loading the bases but all the women were left on base. Zangrilli singled to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning, followed by a double from Rohon. Both women were left in scoring position as Springfield led 14-0.
SUNY New Paltz continues its 10-game slate at the PFX Spring Games Friday, facing Kalamazoo and Amherst at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
