SUNY New Paltz Baseball Secures Series Sweep of Plattsburgh Following 14-2 Win

Hawks take Game 3 on the road over Cardinals Saturday 14-2 in eight innings

Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz secured a regular season series sweep of Plattsburgh Saturday following a 14-2 eight-inning win over the Cardinals on the road Saturday morning.

The Hawks improved to 20-8 overall, notching just its seventh 20-plus win season, and second in the last nine years including its second straight, while also boosting its SUNYAC record to 9-2 overall.

SUNY New Paltz made quick work of the Cardinals, needing just eight innings to take game three Saturday as it produced 16 hits. The middle of the lineup was the catalyst, as Michael Ascanio went 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a stolen base and a walk in the outing, while Wallace Kirkpatrick finished 3-for-5 with a run and three RBI.

Xavier Zykoff earned the start and threw three innings, giving up four hits, one earned run and two walks with one strikeout. Ryan Knieriemen pitched the final four innings, allowing three hits, one run, none earned and two walks with two strikeouts, as he took the win and improved his record to 1-1 on the year.
Anthony Pericolosi

SUNY New Paltz went up by six after the first two innings and added seven more in the fourth and fifth, respectively. Ascanio brought the first run home with a groundout in the first inning before Kirkpatrick hit an RBI single to plate Tommy Kreider from third to start the top of the first inning. Anthony Pericolosi belted a two-run home run in the second before Kirkpatrick came through again with a two RBI base hit to bring the lead to 6-0 in the second.

Garrett Grathwohl was the catlyast in the fourth, ripping a double to center field, which scored Dillon Ristano and Fabian Apciella. Matt Sarni capped the inning with an RBI base hit to plate Grathwohl. Asacnio registered an RBI base hit to bring Kreider home from second. Ascanio eventually scored on a wild pitch before Apicella recorded a two RBI base hit through the middle of the infield to bring the cushion to 13-1 for the Hawks. Kreider was the final run of the day for SUNY New Paltz, scoring on a throwing error in the sixth to solidify the 14-2 outcome.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action for four-straight non-conference matchups starting with Ramapo on the road Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
